      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Glassland's grim setting is leavened by writer-director Gerard Barrett's compassionate treatment of his characters -- and bolstered by a strong cast led by Toni Collette and Jack Reynor.

Audience Member Toni Collette has an established persona as frustrated housewife, but didn't quite have the desperate bipolarity this role needed. It's still heartening to see mainstream exponents flirting with more indy-spirited projects, and I feel that's where this really makes some substantial contributions. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member A very uneventful movie. A son trying to help his alcoholic mother. That's about it. I found the excuses for her alcoholism quite disgusting blaming her disabled son. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Quite boring and slow with no real sense of direction Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member As the speed in which the movie slowly paced, and paced with times little or no dialogue, I still found myself following the proverbial tortoise. Jack and Toni, whom I have seen in many films, both delivered an awe-mazing performance. They portrayed a real mother-son performance on very real issues!!! If you're an Indie film lover than this is worth a look. Though may not be for all d/t such a very slow pace and an even less than satisfying ending. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Damn Jack and Toni are powerful in this modest little tale with a whole lot of emotion. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member You can add the chilly Irish drama "Glassland" to the very large list of films where Toni Collette gives an outstanding performance and the much larger list of arthouse films that undermine their positives with a weak conclusion. May 3, 2016 Full Review Bilge Ebiri New York Magazine/Vulture Glassland smartly plays off Jean's unhinged disintegration against John's tense, subdued control. In that contrast lies the power of this film. Mar 31, 2016 Full Review Brian Moylan Guardian It earns its tears, even if it skimps out on everything else. Rated: 3/5 Mar 31, 2016 Full Review Angus Batey NME (New Musical Express) A stark, deeply moving examination of a family stretched beyond breaking point by addiction and poverty. Rated: 4/5 May 18, 2021 Full Review Josh Goller Spectrum Culture As a slow-burning, micro-budgeted Irish indie steeped in grim realities and propulsive emotions, Glassland is a vehicle that allows Reynor to truly shine. Rated: 3.25/5 Jul 20, 2019 Full Review Mae Abdulbaki Movies with Mae "Glassland" boasts a strong lead cast who help lift the film greatly and to soaring heights in its emotional richness. If not for this, it may have drowned in its dark themes and story. Rated: 3/5 Apr 5, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews
