What to Know

Critics Consensus

An overwritten and emotionally inert misfire, Glenrothan waste its cast and premise on contrived storytelling, tonal misjudgments, and a surprisingly clumsy directorial effort from Brian Cox.

...virtually every scene feels awkwardly pieced together, with jolly folk music used as an all-purpose adhesive: there’s no evidence that cinema is a language Cox naturally thinks in. Go to Full Review

A charming, very well-acted comedy-drama...In his first directorial venture, veteran Brian Cox - one of the best, most versatile character actors on Earth - elicits very high-grade performances from his A-list cast. Go to Full Review

Though Cox is one of the best-spoken actors alive, he and his fellow cast members recite their lines without any discernible passion or belief. Go to Full Review

Helen L @HelgaBabette 1d I loved this easy to watch feel good movie! The scenery and cinematography were beautifully shot. Complicated family relationships probably resonate with a lot of people. But at the end of the movie I just wanted to be in the Highlands drinking a dram! See more Garry B @RT57694310 2d If you want a film full of predictable cliches, then this is the one for you. Was so hopeful but my pringles were much more entertaining than this rubbish. The cast and theme (I'm a Scot) got me there but oh dear ... you could feel the 'setup' of each scene as it was so contrived and fake. I'd say to the cast 'don't give up your day jobs', but I think this is their day job!! See more Lynn C @RT19810226 Jun 21 Three of us went along with no expectations and came away saying one of the best movies we’ve seen in ages! Excellent acting, lovely Scottish scenery, a story that will resonate with a lot of families and wonderful music. See more Ishbel B @RT26791349 May 23 Please watch with no expectations and you will be pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the interaction between Brian Cox and Alan Cumming and the down to earth no nonsense character played by Shirley Henderson. Bring Scottish I loved the music sessions in the local pub. Of course the scenery was beautiful. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 See more Ali K @Film26 May 12 OAlan Cummings is unconvincing as a heterosexual Dad and the script seems somewhat bogged down in predictable plot lines and shades of woke inclusivity. As a directorial debut Brian Cox should be proud but a better storyline would have helped. Shirley Henderson was fantastic and brought her character fully to life. It isn’t Local Hero but then again that particular movie set the bar very high. Based in the Scottish Highlands, the story revolves around the lives of two brothers (played by Alan Cumming and Brian Cox), estranged for almost 40 years. A forced reunion triggers a series of reflective anecdotal moments that draw the audience into the mind of character. The viewer is positioned to feel the unspoken emotions from the protagonist’s perspective, whilst hearing the frustrations of the other characters. Interestingly, both Cummings and Cox (who also directed the film) have aspects of their own lives played out on the screen. Anyone who has unresolved issues from their past or family traumas will be left with a nod to consider forgiveness and potential resolution, if not restoration. And for that reason it is worth a watch. See more Read all reviews
