With thought-provoking themes lurking beneath its absurd premise, Glorious is a brightly blood-spattered genre treat from director Rebekah McKendry.

Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald 09/08/2022
Director and horror obsessive Rebekah McKendry pays both homage and fromage to H.P. Lovecraft, David Cronenberg and Stanley Kubrick in an enjoyably loopy movie that has a sense of humour and visual style. Go to Full Review

As gruesomely hysterical as much of Glorious may be, the foundation of toxic masculinity it’s built upon is anything but silly, McKendry giving it the brutally grisly evisceration it deserves. Go to Full Review

Even at 80 minutes, “Glorious” feels four times too long for what it is. Go to Full Review

The limited number of cast members and restricted location heightens the tension because the viewer is as trapped as the protagonist. It’s an arresting odd-couple character study, bleak yet wrapped up with an ending worthy of “Tales of the Crypt.” Go to Full Review

Director Rebekah McKendry plumbs the depth of Lovecraft’s fundamental philosophy in “Glorious,” a grungy, gross, intoxicatingly transgressive locked-room nightmare. Go to Full Review

Director Rebekah McKendry and her team understand the elasticity of the premise. Utilize it too poorly, and it can end up being forgettable. Stretch it too much, and it can end up being boring. But they hit the sweet spot. Go to Full Review

Nick S Nov 27 I came into the film not knowing anything at all and stumbled on it actually after trying to find some good Lovecratftian films to watch. I was pleasantly surprised how great the film was. Definitely a much watch See more chad d @Chaddie Oct 18 I am astounded by how low the audience score is… anyone who can appreciate a straight up Lovecraftian cosmic horror film with some great comedy and a great twist will find this fantastic, Ryan Kwanten earned his chops on True Blood and continues to shine in everything I’ve seen him in, and the glory hole God voiced by JK Simmons is a great touch. Don’t miss this one, it’s one of the few gems Shudder has made in between all the junk they seem to create just for the sake of new content. See more Logan D Oct 7 A hearbroken man (Ryan Kwanten) at a rest stop encounters a strange entity (JK Simmons) in the bathroom stall. A highly original chamber film featuring the Cthulu mythos. I loved the contrast between the gritty and the surreal. Kwanten delivers a raw, anxious performance. I know they were attempting to go beyond the stereotype for the voice of the entity and Simmon's is certainly able to be soothing and resonant. However, I found his voice too familiar and distracting. Perhaps the best film ever set in a rest stop bathroom with an Elder God. He stops at a rest stop and recalls his ex-girlfriend Brenda (Sylvia Grace Crim). He eats a chocolate bar from a vendor machine and starts to drink whiskey from a bottle. Drunken, he burns his possessions, including many photos and his trousers, and faints on the floor. In the morning, he goes to the stall in an empty restroom in bad shape to vomit. A voice in the next stall talks to him and says that his name is Ghatanothoa (J.K. Simmons). Then he explains that he is a demigod, created by his father, who created the universe, to destroy humanity but he was trapped by his siblings. Wes believes the guy is crazy and cries for help. Supervisor Gary C. (André Lamar) comes to the restroom and Wes leans that Ghatanothoa is not lying. “Glorious” (2022) is a low budget horror movie directed by Rebekah McKendry. The film is developed basically in one location, a dirty and derelict restroom in a rest stop of the road. Films with these characteristics (low budget, one location only, few characters) may work, provided the screenplay is good. Unfortunately, the screenplay of “Glorious” is not good enough to hold the attention of the viewer and may cause somnolence. The final plot point, where is disclosed about what happened to Brenda and who is Wes, is weak. My vote is three. J.K. Simmons voice acting is terrific as always! A very fun sci-fi movie that blends some very thoughtful dialogue about morality and purpose in the world with dark humor and trippy visuals. An absolute gem of an independent film! See more Read all reviews
