When his televangelist father dies, it's up to Rev. Bobby Joe (Richard Thomas) to take over the family ministry and sustain the high ratings garnered by his charismatic father. Unfortunately, Bobby Joe's earnest but uninspiring efforts place the entire production in danger of folding, until he discovers a sexy rock singer he rechristens "Sister Ruth" (Ellen Greene), who steals the show. Ruth's new persona quickly becomes a sensation, but the newfound popularity comes at a cost.
