Jim D I like this movie. It's ahead of its time having a computer that runs the research station and showing how research must be done in various disciplines before a major project can be a success. Many movies of this era had one or two scientists doing everything. This movie shows the important balance between science and engineering with the government needing to be involved for projects that aren't going to show a profit in a time frame that would interest corporations (like the internet and GPS and many others). The other idea I like is the use of the stealth air vehicle beaming a signal into an unknown hardware part of the main computer just as malware today might be surreptitiously loaded into a modern computer allowing an attacker to use or control the computer undetected. Also, even though the robots are pretty weird looking, they are truly utilitarian as you would expect in a lab. I like the large cast and they act like real people and not super heroes. I like this as a mystery and as a science fiction movie although the "fiction" has pretty much come true today. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/30/24 Full Review Steve D An absolute mess of a film. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/24 Full Review william k Above-average, original sci-fi drama within a Cold War background still is quite silly, but quite entertaining and it's good color cinematography is enjoyable to watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I enjoyed this movie. A lot of later sci-fi borrowed from its familiar tropes, which were somewhat fresher when this film dished them up, delivered unpretentiously with the requisite actors to maintain a straight face. I found some of the directing interesting, as well as some of the over extended stock footage sequences of planes scrambling and a lab monkey. Despite its made for TV aesthetic, given when it was made, it is almost a template for much that followed (think Andromeda Strain), including that singular invention of the 1950's, the dishy lady scientist. The film demonstrates a kind of fascination with tech that is genuine and uses cutting edge stock photography of actual automation in the nuclear industry, etc in its day. The fine script is laced not only with tech sounding jargon but attempts to intelligently address concepts of cybernetics, computer hacking, energy, possible uses of frequencies of radiation, etc. Some of the set designs are creative and almost retro cool enough to not require updating. To get an idea of how effective this movie is, imagine Gog and Magog replaced by something slightly more convincing and threatening (without the apparently useless hilarious phallic blow torches). The future seems to have begun a long time ago and to have not changed much since, besides the density of video game special FX. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member Frightened Blobbo badly as young child. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member I actually thought this was quite good. Is it dated? Of course! It was made 60+ years ago! So there are attitudes and science that really don't hold up, but the core idea is strong because it avoids a couple of the most obvious tropes and instead aims to be a kind of techno-thriller. I went in with the low expectations I have for the majority of of 50s SF, not every film can be Them!, Day The Earth Stood Still, or Thing From Another World. But this is a clever enough film that it overcomes most of it's flaws. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Read all reviews
