Caroline Madden Vague Visages Aside from its off-kilter science fiction elements and generational confusion, Going Viral is an amusing and playful romp that will remind viewers of everything wonderful about the 1980s. Feb 7, 2025 Full Review Joel Fisher Battle Royale With Cheese All in all, Going Viral is a satisfying movie that doesn’t pander to a new generation, nor does it try too hard to pull the strings of those wishing they could go back in time. David M Buffalo 8 goes neural with clear philosophical and neurological themes. This film captivated me. The 'real-world' setting of a southern suburb in the 1980s provides a backdrop of simpler times, and the narrative examines today's digital narcissism. We get sucked into 'the matrix' by allowing our brains' synapses to rearrange themselves according to the constraints and functions of microchips. We become the chimera and thus inhabit the inside of a circuit board more than we inhabit an 'external reality'. The conceit of having the victims get sucked into a screen, while on some scales the reverse of what actually happens, works very nicely (the machine also enters the ghost and possesses it that way, but plenty of films out there have already shown it in this direction). In practical effect, the very fantasy of it seemed more accurate precisely because of how the visuals and narrative abstract the concrete process. Related viewing: 1985's _The Goonies_. Related reading: Stephen L. Talbott's _The Future Does Not Compute_ (1995) and _Devices of the Soul_ (2007); (Sebastopol, California: O'Reilly Media). It does have a low budget feel .The movie's theme scratches only the surface. The film is engaging and gives great nostalgic feels. The feel of the internet lures and and fame are very apparent. It attracts an audience that wants to blend the relevance and retro fun. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/07/25 Full Review Kolby K I thought that the movie was entertaining, and my favorite character was Mr. Viral. One thing that didn't make sense to me was how the main character, the prankster, got together with the main girl character when their relationship was never hinted at as romantic until the end. But overall, I think that the movie is entertaining and fun to watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/07/25 Full Review Luke A This movie is pretty cheesy, but it works with the 80's vibe this movie gives off with the soundtrack and special effects. It truly looked like they were in an old arcade game at the end of the movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/07/25 Full Review Anslee T Going Viral is a witty and enjoyable film that explores how social media can quickly alter people's lives, either positively or negatively. The movie follows a young man who, after one of his videos goes viral, suddenly becomes famous. He first relishes the attention, but he quickly learns that being famous on the internet isn't all fun and games. The way the film depicts the stress of constantly being online is among its better features. Initially hilarious, the main character gradually loses control of his life as he gains popularity. His family, friends, and even his safety begin to deteriorate. Even though the film is frequently humorous and exaggerated, this gives it a genuine and emotional tone. Going Viral is ultimately an innovative film that conveys a valuable lesson, not just a cheesy comedy. It demonstrates that although the internet has the power to instantly make someone famous, it can also quickly destroy that fame. Anyone who uses social media or wants to learn more about how online fame operates should see this film, in my opinion. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/07/25 Full Review Cindy R I found Going Viral to be a pleasant, 80's influenced film with a funny, relatable dialogue. Although some of the storylines weren't shocking or new, it was well done, and I appreciated the cheesiness as that is a staple of the decade! The romance storyline was expected but nonetheless satisfying to see. Our main character Beckett realized important life lessons, too; all is not always greener on the other side, integrity is always more important than popularity, and appreciate the people who are there for you no matter what. The cast was relatable (we all knew the mean girl, the bully, and the misfits at some point!) and the production design created such nostalgia with the sets. Great watch, would probably watch it again in passing. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/07/25 Full Review Read all reviews
