The gripping but doleful "Golden Dawn Girls" reminds us that, depending on where you stand, a dawn can look like a sunset, and this one looks to be ushering in a very long night.

The three women's distinct, contrasting personalities carry "Golden Dawn Girls" at an intriguing microcosmic level, to the point that the film identifies the party's menfolk as little as possible.

Bustnes inserts himself into the film, sometimes getting in the way of the action. And his line of questioning to the women gets repetitive. But he exposes the party's Nazi sympathies and fascist agenda and those tiki torches are truly terrifying.

Every Nick Broomfield-esque cut to Bustnes's look of constipated despair holds up a deadpan mirror to the viewer, providing that spoonful of gallows humour that makes the bleakness go down.

I'm not sure the director succeeds. It seems he has a very simplified view of Greece in his mind and the approach on the matter is not the best possible. I don't think that a "neutral" spectator would come to form a particularly negative opinion about those neo-nazi women if they are portrayed as everyday people (who may have even been brainwashed by their family?). There is an awkwardness all around.
