V R The idea of the movie is noble, but I am struck by the fact that none of the characters portrayed by black actors were good, or people of integrity. For example, although Seth's friend is a good friend to him, he gets "bad grades" and it is implied that he is a drug dealer. His boss is verbally and even physically abusive, just downright mean. Of course, we have the "tough-guy" whose job it is to convince Seth to stop seeing Belen is the stereotype of suburban nightmares. Sadly, in the frame before Seth discovers his room "tossed," who walks by? The "urban thug," complete with doo-rag, braids, white socks & shower shoes. Once again, providing imagery of connecting bad things with black people. I don't blame the actors for playing these roles, I fault Josiah David Warren and everyone responsible for perpetuating these negative images. This is particularly disappointing in a movie that has so many allusions to Christianity. Seth's house? Not WJWD! I've seen other products by Mr. Warren, but this 2013 effort left a bad taste in my mouth for several reasons, not the least of which is the implicit racially skewed bias portrayed. The interaction between Belen's parents and Seth had its share of classist bias, to be sure, but Belen provided the balance in that scenario. Where was the racial balance of "good people on both sides?" As a Christian, this is a discouraging pattern to see in films seemingly targeting a particular audience. To quote Seth, "It's not a sin to be poor," and Mr. Warren, it's not a sin to be black either. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
