Critics Consensus

Dark, intelligent, and stylish to a fault, Gone Girl plays to director David Fincher's sick strengths while bringing the best out of stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike.

Olivia Luder One Room With A View Gone Girl is the movie Flynn fans hoped for and sets Pike up for a worthy Oscar nomination but Fincher disappoints in failing to improve upon the already-brilliant book. Rated: 4/5 May 25, 2019 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Gone Girl is a rather funhouse version of this fateful couple's relationship that teeters on depravity, desperation and bitter irony in its every step. Rated: A Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire 'Gone Girl' may come advertised as a thriller, but that's Fincher being a trickster-he's gone and made the curtest, nastiest, most acidic black comedy about the marital accord since 'The War of the Roses.' Jun 18, 2016 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson To satiate your curiosity, the list of appropriate adjectives of what follows in the second and third acts would include twisted, dark, seething, shocking, disturbing, unsettling, rich, creepy, and engrossing. Rated: 5/5 Oct 7, 2024 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast Gone Girl is a contemporary classic. A great Fincher film with two stellar leads performances (seriously, Affleck is doing great work playing off his own public persona). Flynn's work is like catnip. Audience Member amazing casting and story Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/06/25 Full Review Cincy M David Fincher’s Gone Girl is a taut, stylish, and deeply unsettling thriller that delivers on every level. I had no real idea of what to expect going into this, but I absolutely loved it. Based on Gillian Flynn’s bestselling novel, the film delves into the dark undercurrents of modern marriage, media frenzy, and personal reinvention. Rosamund Pike provides a hauntingly brilliant performance as Amy Dunne, a woman trapped in what may or may not be an unhappy marriage. Her performance is layered and unnerving as she seamlessly shifts from victim to villain. The film begins as a standard missing person story: Amy disappears on her 5th wedding anniversary, and her husband Nick (Ben Affleck) quickly becomes the prime suspect. As the narrative unfolds, timelines blur, motives twist. What emerges is a chilling portrait of manipulation and media spectacle. Trent Reznor's score creates a creeping sense of dread. But it’s Pike’s performance that anchors the film. She is alternately cool and terrifying. Gone Girl is a provocative commentary on love, gender expectations, and the roles we play for each other. If you liked Girl on the Train and Fight Club, you'll probably like this. Rating: 7.7/10 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review Paul S This is one of the best crime-dramas I've ever seen. The story was intense and compelling, and it provided really great performances from the cast. I definitely recommend it for crime and drama fans!
