Bosley Crowther New York Times Under Vincente Minnelli's direction, the film has a certain style and pace. But it is much more vulgar than stylish, much more sluggish and dull than fast. Mar 16, 2020 Full Review Richard Brody New Yorker Minnelli, whose work brings together an extraordinary set of themes, looks at the violence and the lust of Hollywood, the riotous pleasure-seeking of its players big and small. Mar 16, 2020 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Even by delving into fantasy for its wildly implausible premise this picturization of George Axelrod's not-so-successful 1960 Broadway play doesn't come off as anything but the mildest type of entertainment. Steve D Not amusing for a single moment. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/24 Full Review Audience Member Future generations are going to think the 1960s were like this ... and they most certainly were not. Pat Boone was laughed at in the 60s and was not a staple of the top 40 - his years were in the 50s. Same for Debbie Reynolds and Tony Curtis. The people dancing the "twist" on the boat? Come on...these people are all in their 40s. 50s. and 60s. This had no relevance to the younger people who were to dominate the 60s with their songs, sounds, and messages. But this is how older people saw younger people. It is the very definition of the generation gap. The casting director hires actors he/she thinks will appeal to younger people and we have ... Pat Boone? C'mon? Really? Where are the real hitmakers of 1965? Where are the Supremes? Lesley Gore? Smokey Robinson? Roy Orbison? Bobby Vee? The music in this film is a throwback to the 40s. So is the generic, bland, what-older-people-thought-rock-music-sounded-like sounds from the soundtrack. Most all 60s movies, with the exception of the all-teenage musical TAMI show (1964), shared this distinction/problem: Older people deciphering what younger music was. Naturally, this was always a fail. This movie didn't take place in America in the 1960s. It took place in some director's head during the 1960's concerning his conception of how he thought American society sounded. It was totally dishonest when it came to all backgrounds. On the other hand, Debbie Reynolds nailed her part and there was some good acting. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review kevin w Cinema great Vincent Minnelli directed this light appetizer about gender swapping. Within the early 1960's Hollywood community infidelity is rampant and no one is faulting one hack screenwriter Charlie Sorel, until a jealous husband (Walter Matthau, playing a Hungarian continental type playboy) catches him in the act and shoots him. Dead. Sorel's bestie (Tony Curtis) is surprised then when his life long buddy shows up again, reincarnated. As Debbie Reynolds. She's pretty good, too. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member really wish i watched it on stage where Lauren bacall were play the Lead :D Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member for it's time, it's great !
