Variety Staff Variety William Hurt is superb as a Moscow militia detective caught between his desires to be simply a good cop and the unfathomable motives of the secret Soviet government, all complicated by an unexpected love for Joanna Pacula. NR D I watch movies and TV to be entertained. I am highly entertained by Gorky Park. It transports me away to another time and place and I can relax and enjoy. Everyone goes on and on about the quality of this and that, but I just want to be entertained and escape into the movie. I'm back for maybe the third time since this movie came out to watch it again. I really like this Gorky Park movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/23/24 Full Review Craig B pretty slow and really does age well. the fur industry certainly isn't worth much these days, so the crime seems silly. If it had more Lee Marvin might have been better, but the story just wasn't enough to fill out 2 hours. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Vic V I recall watching this back in the 80s when I was a wee lad in VHS… I remember it was one of the better shows. Growing up during the Cold War, it was the first show where the Russians are portrayed as all “evil” or “enemies” or Rambo fodder. Now.. 42 years later, the acting is a bit “80s”, and perhaps the characters are a bit stereotyped by today’s cinematic standards, I still enjoyed it. Thank you 80s cinema.. for all the memories. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/16/24 Full Review Alejandro E I don't know the book on which the film is based, which starts well as a police thriller, but little by little the development gets tangled up and the appeal of the plot deflates. And it's a shame that, at this point, it can't deserve an update. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/07/24 Full Review Michael R It was more timely back in the 80s but still interesting. Hurt is very solid. Based on an excellent novel. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/04/24 Full Review R. S The movie was interesting to watch and Hurt was the perfect guy to play against Marvin. It was intelligent and clever which probably dropped many Sesame Street fans but it was consistent. I bought the DVD and have watched it dozens of times. My Mom liked the Rolls Royce and I finally located one we could afford and they owned it until they died. I read every one of Martin Cruz Smith's books and went to Moscow and ST Petersburg several times. The character Renko became famous and the writer a Best Seller. It's a shame he has Parkinson's now, he is so bright and articulate. His books are at the top of my list of favorites not just for detectives but for any kind of writing. Just excellent Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review Read all reviews
