      Critics Consensus

Beautifully shot but utterly vapid, Grace of Monaco fails to honor either its subject or its audience.

Steve D Fake and wooden. A biopic without any truth behind it. Why? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/22/23 Full Review Audience Member This may be the worst movie that I've ever seen. I'm not a snob when it comes to movies, either, I like all kinds, but this was so bad that I couldn't even watch the entire thing. I love Grace Kelly and have seen many of her movies and many documentaries about her life. This movie was a disgrace (no pun intended) to Grace Kelly's life and legacy. Nicole Kidman can act and we all know that, but I'm not sure what happened here or that it's the fact that the script was just so badly written that even she couldn't make this tolerable. Then there is the fact that the other actors in this film were so bad that at times it was almost comical. I mean What was with the actor portraying Alfred Hitchcock? He was so awful that I think he would have been booed off stage even if it had been at a high school play. I've sat through some bad movies before and still waited for the end, but this is the first movie I think that I have ever watched where I just couldn't give up the remaining 45 minutes or so of my life and I just gave up. I'm not sure if this movie was ever in theaters, but if it was and I had been there, I would have walked out. People should definitely save themselves from the physical and mental discomfort that comes from trying to watch this movie. It actually made me feel sorry for Nicole Kidman because this is got to be a film that she wishes she had never been anywhere close to, let alone starring in. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member We really enjoyed it. No clue why it was rated so low. Nicole Kidman was amazing as Grace Kelly. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/12/21 Full Review Audience Member Honestly I can't say enough about how Nicole Kidman knocked this one out of the park. The onscreen chemistry with Tim Roth was very palpable. If only there could be a sequel, it would be a treat to see them together again. Unfortunately, history was not kind of enough to allow it. Thanks for reading my review. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review andrei d Kinda dumb but Kidman is still good Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review william k A quite pedestrian depiction of an episode of Monegasque history and Grace Kelly's part in it; Nicole Kidman's fits into the title role effortlessly. Tirdad Derakhshani Philadelphia Inquirer Kidman seemed a natural choice to play Kelly. She manages to soar in several scenes. Hampered by the subpar material, she seems utterly lost, unable to master what could have been the role of her career. May 26, 2015 Full Review Kate Muir Times (UK) Not so much a turkey as a dodo, Grace of Monaco never takes flight and extinction is probably the best course for it. Rated: 1/5 Jun 16, 2014 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) This cack-handed snapshot of "Grace Kelly's greatest role" is destined to become another epithet-coining catastrophe, the benchmark by which badder-than-bad biopics will be judged in years to come. Rated: 1/5 Jun 8, 2014 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Dahan’s showy direction that overstates every scene; he tries to compensate for an emotionally inert drama with style and instead underscores how affectless the whole thing manages to be. Rated: 2/4 Jun 9, 2022 Full Review Leigh Paatsch Herald Sun (Australia) Viewing Grace of Monaco is like learning a flock of geese is secretly living inside your local library. It just keeps honking at the wrong times, all the time. Rated: 1/5 Apr 21, 2020 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com While Kidman is certainly a big draw here, an impuissant script and a lascivious amount of obsessive close-ups distract from a performance that appears to contradict the political turmoil behind the scenes.
