Critics Consensus

A gross-out comedy that's more gross than comedic, Grandma's Boy is lazy and unrewarding.

Joshua Katzman Chicago Reader The sex, fart, and pot jokes come so fast and furious that a white flag seems the most appropriate response. Aug 15, 2015 Full Review Nathan Rabin AV Club Hilarity fails to ensue in the workplace or at home, in spite of the late introduction of a fighting, driving monkey. Rated: D+ Sep 23, 2006 Full Review Marc Savlov Austin Chronicle It's gross, it's cheesy, and it's baked beyond all reasonable limits, but this everything-and-the-kitchen-sink comic soufflé still manages to be goofily entertaining beyond all expectations. Rated: 2/5 Jan 15, 2006 Full Review Heather Boerner Common Sense Media Absolutely dreadful and offensive comedy. Rated: 1/5 Dec 18, 2010 Full Review Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed So filled with untapped laughs, potentially interesting sub-plots and fails in every single aspect in a mostly laughless stoner comedy. Apr 29, 2009 Full Review Ethan Alter Film Journal International Even if you aren't under the influence, you might find yourself chuckling at various points during the movie, if only in disbelief at some of the things the cast is asked to do. Audience Member I watched this movie for the first time in 2008 on a Ski Trip. The movie basically became our theme movie for the entire week. We watched this movie probably 15 times, it was just always playing in the background and became the core of many inside jokes. This movie is hilarious. If you are expecting Daniel Day Lewis, this isn't the movie for you. The critiques are a bit harsh always with comedies but this truly is a gem of a comedy. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/31/25 Full Review Ryan O Why is being a movie critic even a job anymore? 85% by audience and 15% by critics.. at least it adds up to 100 I guess. Critics need to, at least, stop critiquing Comedies. They always hate them and the ones that they do seem to like have some common... players? Is that the right word? Grandma's Boy is undeniably funny if you're under the age of 60 and if you're not then maybe you don't have your proverbial finger on the pulse anymore. You must watch this movie if you're not a senior citizen and you like to laugh. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/30/25 Full Review Louie C For what it is—a raunchy, half-baked stoner film—this movie has achieved cult classic status and is cherished by many. With its questionable acting, outrageous jokes, and late-night comedy vibes, it's definitely a must-see. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/24/25 Full Review Wolverine P Such a great movie, I watch it whenever it is on! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/10/25 Full Review Gerardo V cult classic, critic score is way low, pretty damn funny, and the story is pretty interesting. Great soundtrack Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/28/25 Full Review Speeed C This result has more to do with how Rotten Tomatoes determines its scores. This movie was a perfect storm of being niche and culty, with just enough critic reviews to meet our criteria. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/28/25 Full Review Read all reviews
