Proma Khosla indieWire At a tight 86 minutes, the film is visually compelling and makes sound use of its lead actors -- a solid debut for Winbush and ultimate victory for “Greenlight.” Rated: B- Jul 31, 2023 Full Review Elisabeth Vincentelli New York Times “Gray Matter” is by-the-numbers, by-committee product. Jul 13, 2023 Full Review John Serba Decider Nothing about the film is particularly memorable beyond the behind-the-camera real-life story that spawned it. Jul 14, 2023 Full Review Frank Swietek One Guy's Opinion Comes across like something retrieved from Stephen King’s wastebasket given bargain-basement “Twilight Zone” treatment. Rated: D Jul 14, 2023 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue More compelling in its setup than its payoff, the film more muddled as it progresses, relying on cliches and losing its grounding in reality. Jul 14, 2023 Full Review Josh Bell Crooked Marquee Gray Matter isn't exactly subtle, but it's no worse than plenty of other low-budget streaming-exclusive sci-fi movies. Dominique C Movie was definitely underrated and should be advertised appropriately to gain the attention of audiences around. Wondering if this will be becomes a serious of movies on how the film ended. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/25/23 Full Review Michael C I really enjoyed this movie, great actors, and cinematography. Plot could use some work but enjoyable film Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/25/23 Full Review Tanya O #GrayMatter is an excellent sci-fi thriller. Loved & enjoyed watching this max original. #MustSee Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/14/23 Full Review Jos R Love this film! I wish it was a tv series rather than a film. For some reason, the poster put me off, but I watched it randomly and then learned about how this was made via Project Green Light and loved it even more. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/09/23 Full Review KEVIN27 This movie had some wicked scenes. Honestly was a head trip! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/27/23 Full Review Steve G Strictly by-the-numbers plot about a young person discovering they are The Special One. If you watch movies to surprised and impressed, you came to the wrong place. Go no farther than the film's title to see how little thought into offering excitement (perhaps "Neutrally-Colored Blob" was copyrighted). Once again we have another feisty powerhouse who, inexplicably, has superior strength hidden just below the surface. Fooey on years of training and experience, all you need are strong emotions, and positive platitudes about owning your power. You go girl. As for our antagonist, the character isn't compelling. He is simply sinister and corrupt with no other agenda than to pursue obeyond being a one-man mutant hunter and jailkeeper. He's a combination of a Sith Lord and the principal from The Breakfast Club. As the film effectively lacks a third act, the zat-and-mouse banter that drains so much of the eughty-eight-minute runtime has no real payoff. The acting is good all-around and our young heroine is genuinely star material. Grey Matter is simply too basic and forgettable to bea good vehicle for talent.
