Anton Bitel Little White Lies What in other hands might have been a lustful low-brow comedy, writer/director Bill Forsyth makes a work of winning charm and surreal background detail, where everyone desires, but not everyone knows what – or who – they want. Aug 9, 2023 Full Review David Denby New York Magazine/Vulture Forsyth has a very pleasing light touch; the movie is sweet, lulling, and often funny -- in all, perfect for young teenagers. Sep 10, 2020 Full Review Bob Thomas Associated Press Bill Forsyth, formerly a maker of industrial films, made Gregory's Girl for $400,000 with a cast of non-professionals. It provides more pure entertainment than many of Hollywood's overproduced epics. Oct 22, 2018 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com …for all it’s flaws to the modern mind, Gregory’s Girl is a remarkably wholesome film; the bigger picture is that it sees beyond a limited male POV and evokes a wider, humanist picture of life, and that’s why it struck a chord with audiences worldwide… Rated: 4/5 Sep 11, 2023 Full Review Judy Stone San Francisco Examiner Forsyth's first major release from Scotland, starring a delightful teenaged beanpole named Gordon John Sinclair, is a charming study in the sweet awkwardness of adolescence. Noah G The best Bill Forsyth film, Gregory is funny and the film does not follow many romcom tropes. It is quirky without being too twee. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/08/23 Full Review isla s This is a quite naive/gentle and endearing watch. Its known as a bit of a cult hit and I can understand why. Its very much a Scottish film, set in Scotland and I recognised the Scottish accents. Its not at all graphic, in terms of sex references, although there are the ocassional nudge nudge type moments (euphemisms) - there is some fairly strong language but little else likely to offend. I thought it was quite sweet seeing the awkward teenager boy bumbling about a bit, trying to decide how to get the girl he fancies, to notice him. The plot pace is pretty slow and it had the look and feel, to me, of a 1980s TV show, rather than that of a feature film per se but I can't say it wasn't appealing. Its dated but its certainly not an awful watch, as I say its endearing but I suppose its no great shakes as such either. As a nostalgic Scottish film, I'd say its worth a watch. Also, I notice its categorised as a comedy film - there are some amusing moments but I certainly wouldn't say I laughed out loud at any point, so I wouldn't watch it if your purely looking for a great laugh but for a slow romantic drama set in Scotland in 1980, its good. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review dave s Bill Forsyth's Gregory's Girl is an immensely likeable but ultimately forgettable Scottish film. Dealing with the universal theme of the awkwardness of teenage love, Gregory (John Gordon-Sinclair) is a painfully awkward adolescent whose unwavering crush on Dorothy (Dee Hepburn) consumes his every waking moment. The characters are all relatable, the dialogue is crisp (but at times incomprehensible, unless you're Scottish), and the situations feel real. On the negative side, the score sounds like it's from a 70s porn film and the final act is thoroughly unsatisfying, leaving the viewer wondering what the point of the first hour was all about. Regardless, for the most part, it's a crackin' good time. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Really lighthearted but warm and whimsical British comedy. By no means hilarious but enjoyable in a homely way. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review KARL O Forty years on its still Bella Bella. When you feel like a good smirk. But that last "dance" scene still irritates me. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/03/21 Full Review Audience Member Last 30 minutes were charming but on the whole it was far too clunky. Every line was delivered unnaturally and felt as though they all went to the same school of acting which taught them to completely water down their Scots and annunciate every single last syllable.
