Grey Gardens offers few new revelations about the eccentric Edie's, but is elevated thanks to powerhouse performances from Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange.

John Doyle Globe and Mail It's a poignant tale of thwarted lives, and a thorough delight. Barrymore is especially compelling as a woman thwarted in love. Jul 6, 2020 Full Review Alessandra Stanley New York Times Ms. Lange and Ms. Barrymore easily play eccentric beauties, but they are even better in the more complicated roles of crazy cat ladies. Jul 25, 2018 Full Review Randee Dawn The Hollywood Reporter The Edies were two women with a half-ounce of talent and a full measure of stubbornness, and they're played beautifully in both old and young states by Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore, who give fearless performances of intriguing luminescence. Jul 25, 2018 Full Review Andy Dehnart Reality Blurred The new film stumbles the most when it recreates moments from the documentary, because even two great actresses just can't compete with people who were not acting, but were instead showing us a part of their incredibly complex selves. Rated: A- Mar 28, 2020 Full Review Maria Sciullo Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Michael Sucsy directs an HBO version that takes a little of this, a little of that, in building toward a (sort-of) happy ending that's hard to swallow. Jul 25, 2018 Full Review John Luttermoser Cleveland Plain Dealer Like everything else about them, it's a trifle odd, carrying in its tones the unmistakable notes of tragedy and triumph. Jerod S Lange and Barrymore play crazy ladies very well. Related to Jackie-O, this mom and daughter duo are stuck in life and stuck in their house. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/28/24 Full Review Ben N A sad story about a life untethered, disconnected from reality. The true sadness comes when the mother Edith, played to perfection by the artful Jessica Lange, drags her innocent daughter into madness with her. Knowingly, yet unable to help herself, she manipulates th epeople around her to her will, which is an unhealthy one to live forever in the estate, never leaving. Being in a snow globe of life , forever. The daughter Edie, played so well by Drew Barrymore, wants nothing more than to see the world and try her hand ad acting and dancing. She has energy and drive, and you could see how being successful - if only supported in the right ways. She is supported financially, and that is another point, but her soul - who she is- is totally unsupported. She is ignored by her father, used by men, and treated like an unhealthy mix of servant/ favorite pet/best friend by her mother. If someone had believed in her, come to check on her even, maybe she could have gotten out of her situation. Regardless , the story is a sad one. It is so interesting to see people of such means waste that away. I imagine people from more meager backgrounds than I have, or different cultures, looking derisively on these elite offspring and the waste of their life, in a way. Excellent movie, great performances. I look forward to watching the documentary that inspired it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/11/23 Full Review Savannah G Anything with Jessica Lange I love but even more Drew did a fabulous job on this movie! its almost a replica of the actual people! fantastic job to also watch it alongside the documentary Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Both actresses do a perfect job. All you ever wanted to know about how the toxic relationship between these two has evolved...well, a little less than that, but still enough to understand the dynamics that went down. A must-see for fans of the documentary. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Heartwarming and realistic performance from Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange. Great representation of the hardships of their relationship and getting Edith's wish come true with the film Grey Gardens. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member 9/27/19 I'm sorry, but I just could not like this movie because I hated the characters so much. The woman are SO annoying. Between their voices, the way the talk, the bickering and complaining and blaming. I could go on and on. Clean up your damn house! You don't work... the internet didn't exist... how the hell are you doing absolutely NOTHING all day??!? Did I get across that I hate the characters?
