Rob S Watacgable, atmospheric film seems to borrow ambience from some film I can't quite pull from memory. As far as ambience, I'd title this one "Outlaw Josey Wales Downstream," as if it were actions going on somewhere downstream of the kids that the Eastwood character left behind, although strictly a modern, albeit rural setting, film. I enjoyed watching this initial offering of a directorial effort and think the $25k was well-spent pretty much on everything but editing. The most remarkable attribute of the film were definitely long uninterrupted sequences of silence, which lends perfectly well to sitting and doing knitting or crochet. It's not much in the way of anything offensive and might had been shot just for "grandma," y'know? While I wouldn't call it "relaxing," I think fair that it offers plenty of time for reflection. So I'd call it "reflective." The plot seems to profile the "rural scene" in credible fashion and spend time on emphasizing that form of realism. Characters each have distinctive personalities and, ultimately, cclear motivations. The plot that goes on behind this carefully-tapestried background consists foremost of the nature of adversity that involves transparency of isolation. Isolation theme basically becomes reinforced by long silences. The base, simple regard for such fundamental concepts as "the devil" contrast most efficiently under such simple life led in relative isolation & insulation from the megacity environ. The bad guy can be rounded up in deed and in word; and has become sole anomaly in defiance of natural law ... if you can get him before he gets you. Lastly, as token to the essential nature of nature, film title actually complements viewer take-away here and there as film rolls on to show that grim reapers are not all one and the same nature; I enjoyed that poetic touch. Perfectly watchable and above-par for an amateur release but still not a "perfect film" and will not be suited for all tastes. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/11/19 Full Review Read all reviews
