Critics Consensus

Guardians of the Galaxy is just as irreverent as fans of the frequently zany Marvel comic would expect -- as well as funny, thrilling, full of heart, and packed with visual splendor.

Edward Porter Times (UK) A cheerful blockbuster in which Star Wars meets Ziggy Stardust... Aug 29, 2022 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire For much of its 122 minutes, Gunn's grab-bag of quirky characters, genre ribbing, and incongruent '70s pop tunes goes over like gangbusters. The trouble is, it's only irreverent to a point. Jun 18, 2016 Full Review Katie Kilkenny The Atlantic If Guardians of the Galaxy is an origin story, it is also a satire of the origin story, one that emphasizes the power of the "We" over that of the "Chosen One." Jun 14, 2016 Full Review Joshua Polanski There Were No Gods Left Guardians of the Galaxy is the movie that made me realize there is something to these so-called “movies.” Jul 5, 2024 Full Review Manik Sharma Firstpost it is worth revisiting the audacity and playfulness that has set the franchise apart from the rest. Jan 25, 2024 Full Review Allison Rose FlickDirect The Guardians' cast has teamed up for four different movies, so it's no surprise their chemistry on screen is undeniable. CJ What a wonderful way to end The original Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy! A roller coaster of emotions throughout. The first 2 movies are some of my favorite Marvel movies to date. The 3rd one was great as well! Well done Marvel! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/06/23 Full Review TC A brilliant end to one of my favorite movie trilogies. A lot more emotion but with a good mix of humor. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/05/23 Full Review Nitzan G The IMAX trilogy was an absolute blast of an experience... The large-scale spaceship battles will never feel the same for me outside this format. Vol. 2 still has the most laugh-out-loud moments by far, but Vol 3 cruises through the middle sweet spot of balance. Makeup and VFX held up incredible on IMAX view! Was great to see how everyone in the theater left with so much gratitude and satisfaction upon the conclusion of this Trilogy. James Gunn made these characters feel so authentic and memorable - I'll sure miss this version of Drax and Mantis. I was also very happy to see Gunn embrace some of the visual style from the Video Game of last year - particular the set design for Orgoscope and the High Evolutionary's vessel. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/04/23 Full Review Christopher C I was surprised at how dark this movie really was.. Still enjoyed 7 hours of GotG trilogy, They didn't have too many jokes like most Marvel movies. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/04/23 Full Review Michael H Loved seeing all films back in theaters. Looking forward to the next marathon of the Marvel universe. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/04/23 Full Review David S I could not ask for a better way for this franchise to go out on. I truly love The Guardians of the Galaxy. Thank you James Gunn for bringing these characters to life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/04/23 Full Review Read all reviews
