Sam Sheppard (George Peppard) is a respected Ohio neurosurgeon whose pregnant wife is brutally murdered in their suburban home. Despite protests of his innocence, he's wrongly charged with the crime and made to stand trial. Sam insists that his wife's killer was a bearded man who also attacked him, but despite plenty of evidence to back up the story, he's nevertheless found guilty and sent to jail for more than a decade before an appeals court overturns the original decision.
