Chris Knight National Post Its episodic nature isn’t enough to derail the film’s charm, which consistently shines through and carries it over any rough transitions. Rated: 3/5 Feb 24, 2023 Full Review Kim Hughes Original Cin Despite committed performances from its cast and gorgeous exterior shots, the story, such as it is, is predictable and stilted. Rated: C+ Feb 24, 2023 Full Review Jorge Ignacio Castillo Planet S Magazine Overall, Guitar Lessons fails to come together, particularly the more dramatic second half. But it has enough small victories to be worth your time. Rated: 2.5/5 Jan 12, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Mark M Who doesn't love a good "grumpy/loner adult meets child/teen from disfunction and form an unlikely friendship that blesses both" movie?!? (See -- About a Boy, Annie, Curly Sue, Karate Kid, and, of course, the best of them all, Up.) However, whatever could have been poignant or moving was effectively lost through some very poor editing/directing decisions. There are scenes that end abruptly, and one goes to the next scene unsure of what just happened in the previous. (In the beginning, a scene ends with Ray (grumpy/loner adult) not wanting to help Ernie (teen from disfunction) learn the guitar. Cut to the next scene and Ernie is riding in Ray's truck. What? How did that happen? In another scene, maybe just 20 seconds long, Ernie is looking for his guitar. He enters the house, looks for it, and can't find it. Peeking his head into another room, he says, "Where's my guitar?" Cut to the next scene and he's walking down railroad tracks. Again, what? Another short (5-ish seconds) scene shows a pawnshop owner lying down on a pew in what looks to be an abandoned church? Why? No idea. Another scene shows a former love interest of Ray's sitting in a bar having a drink, no one says a thing to her and she says nothing...that scene cuts away. Why are we seeing that? Someone help a viewer out with some info! Some of the above scenes (not the one with the pawnshop owner) become clear later...but it's hard to enjoy a movie when you're constantly thinking "What in the world is going on?" the whole time.
