      DAVID H Great acting from the protagonist, a character that could have made very interesting movie story. Unfortunately, it tries to tell too much with branches of subplots, some not quite developed (like the affair with the band mate). As such, it is too long. Re-edit to 90 minutes might be better. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/14/19 Full Review Scott More than a biography of a worker-artist in the DDR whose outspokenness with respect to hypocritical lies and contradictions that underlay real existing socialism, it is an investigation of collaboration with the secret police and the unintended consequences this had for a free-thinking dreamer who himself became an object of investigative oversight. After unification and the incomplete, but damaging Gauck files left Gundi unable to adequately apologize for his collaboration. The same moral hollowness may also lie at the pit of a love triangle that gives him what he wants, but at what price? A very, very insightful and disturbing exploration of life in the former DDR set in the depressing and relentless open pit excavation machinery in the drab and depressing Lausitz.
