Audience Member Nitin Rose directs this moving, powerful saga of two brothers, Gunga and Jumna, who are torn apart by fate and villainy. Dilip Kumar gives one of the best performances of his career playing the role of Gunga, who does everything he can in order to make sure his brother Jumna gets the best possible education. Nasir Khan is as good as Kumar playing the role of Jumna, who goes off to the city to do his studying. The film also sees a terrific performance from Vyjayanthimala in her role as DHanno, a local girl who Gunga saves and ends up falling in love with her. The direction from Rose is very good because he keeps a good pace going from start to finish, while the script is very well written by Kumar, who also produced the film as well. There is excellent cinematography to be had in glorious technicolour, while the set is also very decent to look at and the dramatic climax will definitely keep you on the edge-of-your-seat. Its song-and-dance sequences are excellent as these are bound to make you feel good. The film won three Filmfare awards - Best Actress for Vyjayanthimala, its superb camerawork and Best Dialogue Writer, while the film also won the National Award for the Second Best Feature Film. It was the highest grossing Bollywood film of the year and this is without a doubt a personal triumph for Dilip Kumar. Overall this is one absolutely fantastic piece of Indian Cinema which I consider to be a masterpiece and is one of the best films of the 1960s. India did not submit an entry to the Academy for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar but I personally would have chosen this film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Gunga Jumna is a fair story of love, honour and obey centering on two brothers with opposite directions in life. It's a little standard in that respect but it's a good example of early colour use in Bollywood. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Read all reviews
