Nick F Gunpoint is a fast-moving well-filmed 1966 Western with a strong cast headed by Audie Murphy and featuring stalwarts Denver Pyle, Royal Dano and Ed Buchanan. It has the added attraction of Joan Staley, a former Playboy pin-up who unfortunately had to retire from movie acting after making this film as she suffered a serious back injury while filming. Staley plays a former girlfriend of Murphy, a town sheriff who is shot and injured when trying to stop a train robbery. Once recovered, he sets of in pursuit of the robbers who have fled across the border into New Mexico. However, when he catches up with the gang, he finds they have an ace card – they have taken his former girlfriend hostage, which sets the scene for a protracted gunfight. Convincing performances, tight directing from Earl Bellamy and a background of spectacular scenery hallmark Gunpoint as a solid and entertaining traditional-style Western. Reviewed by NICK FLETCHER.
