Critics Consensus

Frenetic to a fault, Guns Akimbo may leave some viewers reaching for the killswitch -- but for others, its videogame-style violence will have plenty of replay value.

Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com Daniel Radcliffe is very good in this movie, but the film starts to lose steam once you realize that it doesn't really have much else to offer beyond these high-energy action sequences. Rated: B- Jun 17, 2020 Full Review Barry Hertz Globe and Mail Howden's film gives itself a good three minutes to play the amateur satirist before it abandons any pretense of cultural commentary and instead embraces every cliché it repeatedly insists it is undermining. Rated: 1/4 Apr 30, 2020 Full Review Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) I don't get what's going on here. Are we trolling these internet guys are not? Are we saying this is okay or not? Because he wins when he does what they do. Feb 29, 2020 Full Review Manuel São Bento MSB Reviews Jason Lei Howden doesn’t hold back on the brutal, violent, bloody, extremely over-the-top action, and as long as the viewer is able to accept this purposefully unrealistic depiction of a real-life videogame death match, it’s a blast of pure entertainment. Rated: B Jul 24, 2023 Full Review Kat Hughes THN Borrowing heavily from the many others, Guns Akimbo is a super-charged, hyper frenetic joy ride back to the days of violent action science-fiction Rated: 3/5 Jul 23, 2021 Full Review Matt Glasby Radio Times [B]y mimicking the breathless tempo of a video game, Howden falls prey to video-game problems: the violence is unreal and weightless; the up-to-the-minute visuals seem immediately dated... Juan G It was exactly what I expected with a splash of cliche predictability and your ensemble of good and bad guys realizing they ultimately lose Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/20/20 Full Review Audience Member Harry Potter in a violent comedy? You betcha! Yet another graphic-novel-turned-movie, this film feels like Harley Quinn meets The Running Man. The story of a nerd-turned-gladiator features lots of shaky close-ups and is violent, hectic, and just hilarious. So much blood and so much laughter at the same time...who knew that's even possible? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Sam S Atrocious. Ill never forgive Daniel Radcliffe. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/03/20 Full Review Ryland C Is it weird that actually enjoyed this movie because of Daniel Radcliffes great goody acting? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/10/25 Full Review Birithivy Y Guns Akimbo - 6.5/10. Daniel Radcliffe has come a long way from his Harry Potter days, choosing to go with a variety of different types of films to deviate from his initial claim to fame. Guns Akimbo has hints of #wanted and other high energy, colourful, and violent films. Though the concept and story is really out there. A graphic designer for an online game goes on a famous real life battle royal (Skizm) discussion board and criticizes them, causing him to end up in a messed up situation (he ends up having guns sewn onto his hands). Forced into the Skizm game, he must fight for his life and figure a way to get out of his predicament. The movie is a fast paced and highly violent film, but entertains because of its simple and weird premise. Radcliffe does a great job of the weird circumstance his career is in, and pulls off a really good American accent as well. Samara Weaving does a good job of playing the violence driven player who has to kill Radcliffe's character. The movie's frenetic pace is shot well by cinematographer Stefan Ciupek, giving the film a video game feel. The movie does suffer at some parts however, as it seems more inclined in showing gross out scenes rather than build upon the story. But when it focuses on action, it does a pretty good job of creating entertaining action set pieces. A decent wild ride of an action film! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/28/24 Full Review Nunya B This movie is exactly what you'd expect it to be. It's an easy watch, full of clichés and funny commentary. If you're looking for a film that will blow your socks off and change your outlook on life, this movie is not the one for you. It's not a piece of art, but it will certainly lift your spirits! :) So, to any and all like-minded people, please give this movie a try! -P Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/25/24 Full Review Read all reviews
