Audience Member Gurrumul, for those who haven't heard of him or for those who know of him but haven't listened to his music, is a movie to be watched either alone or with someone close. It's a touching journey, sometimes sad, other times incredibly happy and then suddenly confronting. From the first song you hear there is a pain that is so oddly relatable that you find yourself wondering why you're getting emotional over a song in which you can't understand the lyrics. It helps you understand that music isn't bound by language, but we are all human and we all feel the raw energy that Gurrumul is sending out. All of a sudden you start to grasp why this man was so special. Following his life as someone who didn't care about fame, who was balancing his culture with the expectations of fans and management as well as wanting to get his music heard and help to spread his people's voice is an experience that anyone will treasure and will not leave you satisfied. You WILL watch this movie more than once. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member It moves beyond a narrative of a man or a people or s song. It is universal, a gift to the world. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Just beautiful - such a nice portrayal of a very special man - delightful and captivating and honest and beautiful Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member A very moving story about this talented Indigenous Australian who put family before fame. So moving watching the celebration of both his mother’s and father’s life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member I acknowledge that Gurrumal is probably a genius and has an excellent singing voice, but I didn't find the singing or movie mesmerising. I thought the movie definitely strayed over the line into hagiography. Walked out after an hour.mesmerising. I thought the movie definitely strayed over the line into hagiography.
