The painstaking attention to detail is very [Sanjay Leela] Bhansali. But unlike his early emotive films, the director's penchant for creating the perfect scene nearly overcomes all else: Guzaarish is a gorgeous-looking, but sterile piece of work.

There is much to admire here: the film is beautifully shot by Sudeep Chatterjee. It has strong performances and there are several scenes which genuinely move you. But there is just as much that is clumsy.

Each shot is worth a photograph in frame. Bhansali is no doubt an aesthete. His imagination is evidently a massive indoor dream on a palette that consistency changes colour tones with every film.

"Guzaarish" is a pretty bleak movie, but it makes a compelling case for a social issue that makes it engaging to watch. The movie works because of its good performances and strong themes. The movie tackles a subject that isn't easy to talk about but handles it with care and sensitivity. There are some moments that feel a bit too much like a movie that takes away a bit from the realism, but the movie still maintains genuine emotions throughout. Overall, I liked this movie as it hit me on an emotional level and also forced me to think about topics that while difficult, are important to be aware of.
