John Anderson Variety More soap opera than high drama, the film is confused and confusing, and tedious to boot. Aug 8, 2011 Full Review Mike Hale New York Times As directed by the Czech veteran Juraj Herz in prestige-television style, the bulk of the film is a classically proportioned and tasteful wartime soap opera. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 4, 2011 Full Review Nick Schager Time Out Compensates for its under-occupation familiarity with poignant performances, confident direction and an impressively sober sense of how the era's tragedy kept expanding exponentially. Audience Member A story about german mill owner Habermann who lives and works with Czech people, he even marry jewish woman. It also shows that not every German was bad and that the departure of Germans after the war was sometimes unrighteous. Good to see the war in a different point of view. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Juraj Herz's attempt at depicting the expulsion of Germans from Sudetenland is indeed a bold move and should find its way to grammar schools. As it displays German and Czech kins in perfectly contemporary outfits indulging in some of the finest examples of post-war misbehaviour, the director had incorporated as many explanatory comments into dialogues as possible, presumably for the sake of the international audience. That made the plot lucid enough for the Chinese and almost indigestible for anyone remotely familiar with the 2WW. (With due respect to all Chinese - why does a Czech ranger share his first ever musings about Hitler to his best German buddy ONLY at the height of Anschluss? Several years after the crisis began??) Having said that, the piece may not be as far-out as, say, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member "Occupants come and go. Czechs stay." A depiction of difficult WWII-times and unjustice done to both Czechs and Germans, good acting (including Karel Roden), a lot of emotions. Both too rushed for me, some illogical scenes and characters somewhat flat and predictable. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member Strong characters, great acting, story from real life. Definitelly the best Czech movie this year.
