      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Half Magic never quite fulfills its apparent goals, but this comedy from writer-director-star Heather Graham is still occasionally affably diverting.

Susan Wloszczyna RogerEbert.com A stumble backward in its cartoony portrait of modern-day womanhood. Rated: 1.5/4 Feb 23, 2018 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times Along the way, Graham, Kinsey and Beatriz trade some hilariously X-rated dialogue. Rated: 3/4 Feb 22, 2018 Full Review Frank Scheck Hollywood Reporter While Half Magic proves too frivolous to make its satirical and social points fully register, it offers diverting pleasures along the way. Feb 22, 2018 Full Review Cate Marquis AWFJ.org On the surface, the film has a lot of the usual rom com low-brow humor and character cuteness, but beneath that plot surface something snarkier is going on. Oct 20, 2021 Full Review Nikki Baughan AWFJ.org The message behind Heather Graham's directorial debut is to be applauded, even if the delivery is somewhat clunky at times. Oct 20, 2021 Full Review Betsy Bozdech AWFJ.org The story is clearly informed by Graham's decades of showbiz experience...we may never know, but we can appreciate Graham's insider's insight on the movie industry, feminism, and what women want. Audience Member Stupid but I like it 2.7 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/15/21 Full Review Juan R It's a pretty cute movie about friendship and sex. Graham does a really nice job directing it and captures some really nice chemistry between the trio of friends. I found Kinsey's storyline the most enjoyable and would've liked a whole movie just about her character. With the exception of Brock, every character was fun. Like I said, it's cute. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/23/20 Full Review Audience Member I enjoyed this movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Really good watch, could watch again, and can recommend. Heather Graham, Angela Kinsey, and Stephanie Beatriz play off each so well in this. It honestly reminds me of "Bad Moms" without kids and less ridiculous. This is a "chick flick" in its truest form. It's not good (or bad) because of that, but it's just a focus of the movie, feeling lost and empowered as a woman character. They make an excellent choice in using Chris D'Elia to portray the chauvinist industry of movies (if to a bit of an extreme). This is also the second time I've seen Johnny Knoxville play a priest, unsettling both times. While the concept of candle based witchcraft is somewhat intriguing, it's just a mechanic (same as the workshop) to interweave the multiple story threads. It would be a little more satisfying if they had a more legitimate bond than "we met this one time" established at the beginning of the story. On the other hand it makes the formula flexible enough that it could be that they joined through AA or a convention, so I can see the use of doing something like this. The movie is charming, and it's good (refreshing in the very least) to see feminine perspective of a romantic / sex based humor of this quality. While I think this is better than average, it's not quite "Bad Moms" level of humor. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Like nails on a chalkboard. So much bad acting Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/05/19 Full Review Audience Member Ridiculous movie. So much annoying bimbo chatter. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/05/19 Full Review Read all reviews
