Over the course of 10 days in May 1969, an infantry squad led by Lt. Frantz (Dylan McDermott) and composed of both seasoned troops and new recruits, attempts to take a hill during the Vietnam War. In between attacks, the squad members deal with the other psychological stresses of the war, including the effect on morale of the antiwar movement back home and flashes of racial hostility between white and African-American soldiers, all mediated by the cool-headed medic, Doc (Courtney B. Irvin, who shot a documentary in Vietnam in 1969, the year the action takes place, makes fine use of the Philippines locations and the verisimilitude supplied by the production team. Go to Full Review

There are a couple of rocky moments, but the large cast of unknowns go through hell convincingly, and illustrate the randomness of mortality. Go to Full Review

A well-made Vietnam War film that narrows its attention to the men of a single platoon in a specific operation. Go to Full Review

Although it was underrated at the time of its release, time will eventually reveal that Hamburger Hill is one of the best and most realistic films made about the Vietnam War. Go to Full Review

Alec B @AlecMichaelB 2d Typically not the kind of film I gravitate toward, but Hamburger Hill is difficult to dismiss. It delivers a stark, unvarnished portrayal of one of the Vietnam War’s most punishing battles, refusing to soften either the violence or the emotional toll. What stands out most is its attention to the soldiers themselves: their fear, exhaustion, and quiet moments of vulnerability, alongside the relentless physical strain of combat. The film also doesn’t shy away from the racial tensions within the ranks, adding another layer that underscores how fractured and human these young men were, even as they fought side by side. One of the greatest war stories I've seen portrayed on film. So much so that you feel as though you were watching a documentary in some scenes, instead of an epic war historical fiction. See more Sabra P @Sabrapriz Feb 2 Serves as a grim reminder of what it was like for young men to live and die in the war in Vietnam. See more Steve H @Steve609 Jan 18 Great film. Not up at the top with movies like Saving private Ryan and Thin red line but one of the top Vietnam movies. I personally think it's better than Platoon. The exhaustion, brutality are palpable. They did a good job of making getting up that hill look like pure misery. See more A P. @FilmFan4547 Dec 18 Visceral, brilliant war film overshadowed by Stone’s Platoon. Definitely the better of the two films in both its production and grit. Keep in mind, Willem Dafoe had to pretend he was being shot in Platoon, because the squibs weren’t exploding on his body. He even had the remote that controlled the squibs in his hand during the scene. Amateurish effort in comparison to Hamburger Hill. See more Jack F @MovieFan111 Nov 19 Dang. Perfect 100. I think this is a lesser known one in the genre, but a worthy watch. See more Mitch B @RT97279008 Jul 17 Compelling. I found the interactions between servicemen insightful. See more Read all reviews
