      What to know

      Critics Consensus

The script's biting premise and Steve Coogan's endearing, off-the-handle performance make Hamlet 2 an hysterical -- if slightly painful -- ride. Read critic reviews

      Movie Info

Hapless high school theater teacher Dana Marschz (Steve Coogan) writes pretentious musical adaptations of Hollywood blockbusters for his indifferent students to perform. His home life is equally shambolic, with his hostile and unhappy wife (Catherine Keener) having an affair with their lodger (David Arquette). When Dana's latest brainstorm, a musical version of "Hamlet" that includes time travel and a visit from Jesus, threatens to get him fired, his students band together on his behalf.

      Audience Reviews for Hamlet 2

"Rock me. Rock me sexy Jesus..." The irreverent indie comedy Hamlet 2 delivers some good laughs, but is uneven and lacks focus. The story follows a high school drama teacher who writes a musical sequel to Shakespeare's Hamlet, but the controversy it creates soon puts the production in jeopardy. Starring Steve Coogan, Elisabeth Shue, Catherine Keener, and Amy Poehler, the film has a strong cast. But the script is weak, and does little to endure the audience to the characters or the play. Additionally, the comedy gets kind of raunchy at times and seems to be done only for shock value. Hamlet 2 is a problematic film that has some fun moments, but in the end it's too much of a mess.

Quite a weird comedy that sometimes tries too hard and the jokes don't come off but has a great central performance from Coogan. It's a little like the film 'Nativity' and like that film leads up to a great final show at the end with songs like 'Raped in the Face' and 'Rock me sexy Jesus' (gotta love those titles!). If you don't like Coogan then you'll hate this but if you're a fan of Partridge et al then you should check this out.

I went into this not expecting much... I was delightfully wrong. This film is outrageous enought to be funny and not too crude to be overly offensive. Steve Coogan plays a great part that I enjoyed. The wimp teacher turned bool guy. The young actors in this are really good as well.

A failed-actor-turned-drama-teacher attempts to save his high school's drama program by putting on an original work called <i>Hamlet 2</i>. This film is goofy as shit. There's no other way to describe Steve Coogan's performance or the premise as a whole. The film constantly puts Coogan's character up for ridicule, and Coogan commits wholeheartedly to each wacky moment. And who would've thought that David Arquette could play the "strong" silent type? I've often wondered if a film about a character who has lost himself in movies would work, and in <i>Hamlet 2</i> it does only to the extent of screwball comedy. There is little in the way of dramatic tension, and I think your enjoyment of the film depends on your tolerance for goofiness. If nothing else, it's impossible to resist playing the sing-along version of "Rock Me Sexy Jesus" one more time.
