A cringe filled waste of time. This isn't a blockbuster or a period piece drama, but popcorn action fantasy must have some standards. Whatever that standard is this is surely well below it. This movie has banal terrible writing. It never fully lands into the realm of good cringe and certainly never comes close to good writing. The story is flat, weak and bereft of any world building. It is your typical unknown foe pushing to a once in a generation moment to let them rule the world. This an old as time story for this genre. What is below average, even for the unadventurous, is how utterly uninteresting the jeopardy turns out to be. A weak uninteresting villain and no character worthy of any care or investment. You can usually tell you are in for a pretty weak ride when almost all of the story was filled in by flashbacks to characters you have never seen. The laziest possible fill in method. Outside of the predictably bad, but also sadly boring, story, is watch it and forget it action and run of the mill visual effects. If nothing else, you need to at least come up with some interesting kill scene or flashy moment, if that is all your film really amounts to. I do not recall even a good moment of adrenaline driven excitement. Overall, an unimaginative waste of a film.

Truly one wickedly spun tale with awesome shooting and fighting scenes directed for the classic fiary tale with a modern twist. Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and Gretel (Gemme Arterton) as children were left in the forest by their father (as the find out later in life) for their own protection. As they grow older they hone their craft to become witch executioners. If you are waiting to see this it is definitely worth the wait.

Even though it is not part of their normal job description as witch hunters, Hansel(Jeremy Renner) and Gretel(Gemma Arterton) still find the time to stop off in a town to rescue Mina(Phila Viitala) from being falsely accused of being a witch by Sheriff Berringer(Peter Stormare). That is the same town, by the way, where children have been disappearing lately which Muriel(Famke Janssen), an actual witch, might know something about. Despite its admittedly dopey sounding premise, it was still possible for "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" to turn out to be something entertaining, especially after its cool opening sequence.(And it is a nice touch having Hansel being diabetic.) But as it soon becomes clear, the movie has no idea what it really wants to be nor what kind of tone it wants to have.(Adam McKay and Will Ferrell are listed as two of the movie's producers which is a clue but nothing more.) Emblematic of that is the casting. Jeremy Renner's normal understated style clashes with any kind of action while Gemma Arterton and Famke Janssen(both veterans of James Bond films) do very much get the whole larger than life thing this movie might be going for.

Don't get excited. It's another entry into the fantasy/action genre (as per League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Van Helsing), with steampunk inspirations, alt soundtrack, and some little gore quotient. Add supposed to be catchy catchphrases whenere a baddie is dispatched and its pretty much predictable before the opening shots. Time passes quickly however and while not surprised you'll not be completely bored either.
