Vadim Rizov AV Club A bracing, adventurous experience. Dec 1, 2016 Full Review Dan Sullivan Film Comment Magazine Buoyed by four captivating performances from its unheralded actresses, Happy Hour is a fascinating, towering confection of contradictions. Sep 26, 2016 Full Review Ryu Spaeth The New Republic In Happy Hour, and particularly in that beautiful scene on the ferry, the world is not just gliding by-it is being slid into place before our eyes, as if for the first time. Sep 2, 2016 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s 317-minute drama is a mysterious movie that begins as one kind of straightforward film before mutating into something much stranger — discussing it thoroughly without spoiling it is tough. Jan 18, 2023 Full Review James Mottram South China Morning Post Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s slow-burning, five-hour meditation on friendship, marriage, contentment and connection. Sam F There's not even a handful of directors who are able to glue you to a screen for several hours and still have you beg for more, and Hamaguchi is one of them. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review Audience Member Too long. If it's tighten it should be more fascinated. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent. Four Japanese woman (and a teen girl too!) and one more beautiful, sexy and smart than the other. kobe, I am coming!! Seriously. ONNA made me fall in love. No bad editing of this on Wiki. Warning: it is only five hours. I wish it were TEN. signed: xfansd lover of all things oriental and editor supreme. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member I wish I could go back in time and tell 16 year old me that his burgeoning interest in "indie" films will someday lead to him watching a 5 hour highly mannered yet low-stakes drama about Japanese women on the cusp of middle age, and that he's going to like it! That's where cinephilia takes you, young fella! ... Anyway, there are a lot of interesting things in this film. How, for example, the characters are so restrained emotionally that the only way they can truly express themselves is by falling down. The veneer of composure makes it all the more entertaining when real truths are uttered. Also interesting is what a dominant role patriarchy plays in the lives of all the characters. It's like an unseen character and it's stifling, for both the men and women. And the men are all heels. It's comical, intentionally or not. However, I docked a half star for the reading scene alone. It might have been realistically boring and squirmy, sure, but it felt unnecessary to let it go on so long. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member As if recalling Jacques Rivette and Edward Yang isn't enough of a declaration of greatness yet, Hamaguchi filters them through lens similar to those of the makers of Sex and the City. Sometimes, a great film ushers itself in the most unexpected manner (who has even heard of this director before?), and this is one such instance.
