This musical biopic dramatizes the life of 19th-century composer Stephen Foster (Douglass Montgomery). While Stephen struggles to make ends meet, his bride-to-be, Susan (Evelyn Venable), leaves him just as a tune he pens for her, called "Oh! Susanna," becomes internationally popular. He then marries a family friend and churns out one famous song after another, but eventually, his brilliant career is beset by a difficult relationship with his wife, financial woes and a serious drinking problem.
