Ben (Joel Moore) and Marcus (Deon Richmond) are college students in New Orleans, enjoying Mardi Gras, when they decide to go on a boat tour of an allegedly cursed bayou. Meeting up with several other tourists, including quietly beautiful Marybeth (Tamara Feldman), they are entertained by their guide Shawn (Parry Shen), who regales them with tales of a ghostly serial killer who wanders the swamp. They laugh off the stories -- until someone, or something, starts picking off members of the group.

Critics Consensus

The over-the-top gore, campy acting, and dim cinematography may be part of Hatchet's self-described old-school ethos, but irony alone can't sustain a horror film.

Lacking the satirical bite of the first Scream... this is mere pastiche that doesn't even wink at what it is pointlessly xeroxing from the past. Go to Full Review

Fun horror-comedy about tourists being picked off in the swamps. Tongues are firmly in cheeks; heads don't stay long on shoulders. Go to Full Review

This low-budget horror spoof lasts only 84 minutes, but seems to take forever. Go to Full Review

The comedy is without feeling. The violence is without warrant. The concept is as old as film. Monster bad – but monster also tragic – but get out of my swamp. Go to Full Review

It’s one of those films that shows when you put horror fans with talent in charge, you get something great. Yeah, it’s not perfect. Yeah, it’s oh so very 2006, but it’s also so much fun, so bloody, it doesn’t hold back... Go to Full Review

Jonas P @Spexus Dec 16 Not bad nor good. It's a horror comedy with REALLY good gore effects but sadly it takes awhile for anything to happen, resulting in it feeling very rushed towards the end. Impressive gore for a b-movie See more Caleb L Oct 5 A fun slasher with a great setting and some of the best practical effects you'll ever see. See more Jonathan O Aug 28 It has some laughs but the opening scene and people vomiting in New Orleans really disgusting and there's some horror clichés that we've seen countless times watching horror and the special effects is fine but not awesome and the quality felt like a direct to video and the writing and the humor is meh. See more SkyRo P @TheMovieSearch May 30 "Hatchet," released in 2007, is a horror film that features a range of actors and actresses, but unfortunately, it falls flat in execution. In my opinion, this is one of the worst horror films I have ever seen. The story revolves around Viktor Crawley, but the performances are painfully lackluster. Many of the actors, some of whom have gone on to have respectable careers or were previously part of noteworthy projects, seem to lose their way in this film. The casting choices, particularly for the lead roles filled by Joel, David Moore, and Deon Richmond, set the tone for failure right from the start. These actors are simply not leading men. One is relegated to a side character, while the other fails to captivate as the central figure, leaving audiences questioning why they should invest in this film. Mercedes McNab, who previously shone as Harmony in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," appears to be stuck in a repetitive role, offering little more than a rehash of her former character—albeit with a gratuitous scene that adds nothing to her development. It makes one wonder where her career has gone since this misstep. The rest of the cast is largely forgettable, including the main actress, who leaves viewers asking, "Who is she? What is her purpose here?" Ultimately, I cannot recommend this film; it is a dismal experience that fails to deliver on any level. See more Read all reviews
