Audience Member This is easily one of the most ambitious and insane of the all of the Shaw brothers movies. A fallen angel helps star-crossed spirits in Heaven escape to the mortal realm because of the injustice of the heavenly gods. Then the reincarnated angel dies in the form of a taxi cab driver when helping the same couple in their plight when attacked by thugs and villains in West Side Story musical like segment. And then comes the fun part, said fallen angel finds himself exploring hell, being introduced to all of the different tortures for various people who have had bad lives. When Merciful Buddha grants the angel a chance to escape hell, he must find four wronged souls and they must literally fight an army of Hell soldiers in order to reincarnate, but must also defeat the faces of the villains who killed them on Earth, now powered up as soldiers/guardians of hell. Packed with all sorts of dreary make up and martial arts madness, this hybrid of fantasy and action works out really well, with a cheesy musical score to make it all come together. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member Bizarre even by Shaw standards. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member I am as big a fan as any of Shaw Brothers movies. Well, I guess it was their early stuff, I wonder if those were the glory days or if this movie was just an anomaly. Because this was some weird stuff, not in a good way. It was like 70s psychedelia somehow seeped into the water but it was a bastard batch. And why the choice of studio for some scenes when some flashbacks were in the street? I am as big a fan as any of the Five Deadly Venoms, so to see them as the dead wrongfully living in hell seems like a good idea. But when it comes after a strange heaven set up and bad fight choreography involving gold hoola-hoops, then each back story being silly and their fights being contained by bad hell set pieces was sad. Kung-Fu Movies should have stayed in the grimey era. Even when Jackie Chan was making Drunken Master 1 through 2, his seemed grimey and although Tsui Hark?s Wong Fei-hung had polish, it was inspired of the era.
