Steve D To much like many others. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/02/24 Full Review Mark B Interesting in it is sub movie from WWI. Pretty dark at times with themes that were available pre Hayes code. And that makes it worth watching. At its best is when it does battle scenes and tense fighting for the crews life. At its worst is the melodrama that makes this dated. Funny lines within the banter. Example. "This is terrible. It's cured ham. Well if it was cured it suffered a relapse." Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/22/23 Full Review Audience Member reel good pre-code actioner Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member If you like wartime submarine movies, you will love this excellent pre-code (pre-censorship) film starring Robert Montgomery and Walter Huston, that takes place in 1918, near the end of World War I (filmed only 15 years after the time of the film!). It' "pre-code" so you will hear talks of sex, a suicide, a forbidden romance, blood, and more! In other words, a more realistic look at life than the Hays code prudes would force on films just a year later. Hell Below is exciting, dramatic, and very suspenseful. It is right up there with the best submarine films, including Das Boot. Very good movie. You will see a relatively young Walter Huston and also Jimmy Durante. Well worth watching, and not dated at all. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Most submarine films are set during WWII, so this one gets some added points of interest for being a WWI sub film. There's captain Walter Huston clashing with office Robert Montgomery and the usual on-shore comedy and romance. It's all pretty standard submarine film fare, but it's well done and actually more effective than many of the submarine films that would follow. There's also a very young Robert Young, of "Father Knows Best" fame. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
