The road movie aspect is also entertaining, but I think that the script goes a bit too far after a fashion, with the various side stories being too many for a single individual to have, although some of the plot twists are really impactful.

Those who aren't put off by the inherent sadness in the concept will find this film compelling in its depiction of how this heroine chooses to choreograph her own exit, and although you may cry, you won't leave the theater depressed.

Japanese mainstream weepies aren't known for their subtlety, but this is a happy exception. While the reveals and twists could easily be extremely over-the-top in the hands of a lesser writer and director, they're well-calibrated here, and quietly devastating.
