Here follows Stefan, a Romanian construction worker living in Brussels who is about to return home to visit his mother, and maybe stay... longer. Using the leftovers from his fridge, he cooks up a big pot of soup and begins handing it out as farewell gifts to friends and family. But while waiting for his car to be fixed, he meets Shuxiu, a Belgian-Chinese woman preparing a doctorate on mosses. Her attention to the near-invisible stops him in his tracks. On the heels of Ghost Tropic (2019), Bas Devos offers another Brussels city symphony. With a quiet grace that's becoming a trademark, he and his team capture both the longing of contemporary urban life and the potential for enchantment that still exists in spaces shared by strangers from different worlds.

Adjust your gaze to the director’s more fine-grained perspective and “Here’s” simple gestures become seismic, its images of the everyday imbued with urgent emotional possibility. Go to Full Review

At only 84 minutes and light on plot, at times this film feels so slight that it might just slip through your fingers. And yet its ethereality is what makes it enchanting. Go to Full Review

Nothing is overtly stated -- this is a Bas Devos film after all. But the details -- a small gift (of soup, what else?) and the private smile that greets it -- speak volumes. Go to Full Review

Here is a film that revels in imagination, in the direct images of its characters’ experiences and the thrumming richness of the world that surrounds them. Go to Full Review

It’s a love story only in the subtlest, gentlest ways—not only between a man and a woman but between both of them and the places they inhabit. It’s a movie that calls us to look closer and appreciate the world around us and the people placed in our path. Go to Full Review

While aesthetically beautiful, Bas Devos’ fourth feature film Here fails to meaningfully answer the questions of identity it poses. Go to Full Review

Julian Rex M @Julian_M Sep 13 Here's obstinate refusal to support narrative cohesion undercuts its thematic underpinnings, but director Bas Devos' desires to foster a thoughtful atmosphere is all on display, and thanks to some talented ensemble cast-members, they mostly pay off. See more Martijn t Jan 18 While preparing to go on vacation to his native Romania, Brussels based construction worker Stefan (Stefan Gota) meets Chinese-Belgian plant biologist Shuxiu (Liyo Gong) during one of his insomnia and 'car getting fixed at the garage' driven walks through the city. This is a big R Romantic film in its smallness, being all about small gestures, unspoken feelings and (urban) nature imagery. The lead characters are far from loners - especially Stefan meets and talks to a lot of people during his walks - but they are both somewhat reserved and don't mind being alone. They are both methodical and careful too. So, made for each other, but it will take them a while to get there and DeVos takes that time. Glad I saw this move in a small reprise program of the best movies of 2024. See more 11/02/2024 Didn’t hate it but it was slow, boring and sad. Some cool AI scenery but there was no plot only that you should live life to the fullest and go after your dreams. See more Dean H 10/03/2024 One of those movies that you watch and makes you think about it for a long time. Very little investment required as it’s decently short but they make every second count. Worth a watch. See more Phillip B 09/28/2024 This is perhaps the best film I’ve seen in a theater in a couple of years. I saw it twice the week it was in town, and was thoroughly enchanted both times. Talk about doing more with less. Absolutely pitch perfect, and the film makers never insult our intelligence by giving us more information than we nominally need to keep moving forward. It works almost like a classic silent film. Little quiet bombs of understanding would burst in my mind for weeks following this move. Exactly what cinema should do.
