Audience Member Harold Arlen wrote the music for three films released in 1944, two of them about soldiers in WWII. WAVES is a real musical that has the talents of Bing Crosby and Betty Hutton to help the film's story sing. Two tunes with lyrics by Johnny Mercer, became instant classics: That Old Black Magic and Accentuate The Positive. The other war film, UP IN ARMS, was a vehicle for Danny Kaye, Dana Andrews and a young Dinah Shore. Arlen wrote three songs with his Cotton Club lyricist Ted Koehler: a ballad, a march and a torch. Kaye had three additional songs by his soon to-be wife, Sylvia Fine. The third film, KISMET, also only had three songs, one of which was deleted before release. It starred Marlene Dietrich and Ronald Coleman. WAVES allows us to hear the best of Arlen - ballads, uptempo, marches, 2 charming love songs and novelties. All the songs bear his unique musical stamp. He also opened BLOOMER GIRL, his only Broadway hit, in October of 1944. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The best movie song ever sung: Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Bing Crosby plays a crooner (!) and Betty Hutton plays twins in this energetic WWII musical; songs include "Let's Take the Long Way Home" and the Oscar-nominated "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive." Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie may remind you of White Christmas when you read about it, but it's slightly different, and it's a good, funny movie. Of course the romance in the movie is predictable, but I say watch this for the comedy, and for Crosby. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Betty Hutton and Bing Crosby are terrific in this wartime comedy musical. It's lightweight entertainment and highly enjoyable. Peppy songs, fun performances. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Betty Hutton and Bing Crosby are terrific in this wartime comedy musical.
