Jim Schembri The Age (Australia) Sadly, the strong performances that were needed to sell this tough drama just aren't there. Rated: 1/5 Jun 16, 2011 Full Review Philippa Hawker The Age (Australia) Quietly, and with an unobtrusive grace, Here I Am explores harsh truths, everyday realities and intimations of change. Rated: 3.5/5 Jun 2, 2011 Full Review David Stratton At the Movies (Australia) Unfortunately, Cole's decision to cast non-professional actors in many roles doesn't pay off; in too many scenes, both Langton and Pittman are awkward and visibly uncomfortable playing their roles, and this reduces the film's impact. Rated: 3/5 Jun 1, 2011 Full Review Andrew F. Peirce The Curb This kind of tragedy can be oppressive, but there's moments of beautiful comedy - mostly from Betty Sumner's Anita - and inviting moments of warmth. Apr 4, 2020 Full Review David Michael Brown Empire Magazine Australasia Here it is, a solid and heartfelt debut. Rated: 3 Jul 4, 2011 Full Review Leigh Paatsch Herald Sun (Australia) The tedious direction of Beck Cole mistakenly assumes mood matters more than character development. Audience Member pretty powerful movie and excellent acting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Just wanted there to be something a little more to it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Here I Am is a soap opera slice of life through the eyes of a reformed junkie Aboriginal mother who wants to reconnect with her young daughter. The use of non-professionals at times leads for what can simply be called bad acting and there is an occasional bout of hectoring, but as the film settles in there is a genuine drama being played out here. It's nobody's film of the eyar, but is a worthwhile film to see, even if I am wondering how soon the new stereotype of indigenous people as being uniformly heavy smoking heavy drinking country music loving sensitive types will wear thin.
