Matthew Gilbert Boston Globe Highlander 2: The Quickening is the dullest and shoddiest action-adventure flick of the year, with only a few cute Sean Connery moments to rescue it from total, sheer and utter bogosity. Feb 15, 2022 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Audiences unfamiliar with the first film will be hard put to follow the action [from a story by Brian Clemens] as it incoherently hops about in time and space. Feb 25, 2009 Full Review Time Out Leaden, laden with effects, short on imagination. Aug 16, 2007 Full Review Ed Travis Hollywood Jesus They missed the mark horribly, but nobody can fault the makers of Highlander 2 for not trying to expand the scope of the original story and take it in totally different directions. Apr 7, 2020 Full Review R.L. Shaffer IGN DVD Feels more like a brainstorm exercise than a feature length film. Rated: 3/10 Nov 6, 2010 Full Review Brian Orndorf BrianOrndorf.com Highlander 2 is a mess. Nevertheless, damn it, it's a gorgeous mess...incoherent, but a joy to stare at for 105 minutes, watching as a franchise is epically flushed down the toilet. Blu B When it was over I didn't know how to react. I was just in shock still like I was told I won the lottery or a terminal illness. Because this throw so much nonsense and confusing stuff at you in a mere 80 minutes the human brain can't process it. At least a rational sane one. Half the time I was trying to process some of the plot elements because it just didn't make sense and completely contradicts what was in the first one. He can die now, he knew who Connery was, he was a midevil alien from another planet, the O-Zone layer biodome in a Blade Runner like world? And than the non stop crazy fight scenes that are just atrociously bizarre and remind me of the Super Mario Bros Movie type nonsense. The special effects are just bizarre and surreal with how they are used despite lots of practical effects. The blue screen effects are ridiculously bad. The humor is so...lazy and out of place at the same time. It feels like chunks of this film is missing, the tone is completely off, it jumps around terribly, it feels like it doesn't even know what it's about half the time. The origin story, romance, or the Bio dome thing which feels forgotten about in the middle all of a sudden becomes the end climax. I am...so confused watching this. And the music is...just over the top ridiculous and doesn't gel in the slightest. This has NONE of the charm, FUN cheese, sweeping settings, and imagination of the first. It feels like the spaghetti method instead here. I will say Connery is the ONE SLIGHTLY average thing in this but he's not in it enough to do anything really. It feels like this forgets and somehow also ignores at the same time parts of the first one as well. I can tell you it's one of the worst sequels ever made and to skip it. But man...I don't even know really what to say. Truly left me speechless and is the only reason it doesn't get a zero. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/10/24 Full Review Adam S There can be only one ... and this isn't it Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/11/24 Full Review Dinos K i can't believe this piece of garbage was a movie. It reminds me more of cosplay. Totally amateur work from everyone, especially from Russell Mulcahy, Christophe Lambert and Sean Connery Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/24 Full Review Joel H I love the Highlander lore. I was a big fan of the TV series, and I thought Highlander II: The Quickening would help me appreciate it even more. Little did I know how bad it would be. This movie completely trashes the plot. Immortals are aliens, I guess, and they are able to fly around on hoverboards. Sean Connery returns because of the magical paycheck offered to him and gives a half-hearted performance which is more heart than the rest of the cast is giving. This movie is so awful that they pretended it didn't happen in the later movies, so I'm just going to pretend that it doesn't exist, as well. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/03/23 Full Review Bennett V This is the only movie I have ever abandoned while watching in the theater. The first film was a B-movie hit that I had watched many times, having fallen in love with the mythology. I was so excited when a sequel was announced, and elated that Connery had joined the cast. Maybe 20 minutes into the showing, I got up and walked out. They had taken a great concept and just crapped all over it. I couldn't stand watching a favorite turn into hot garbage.
