Danny Bowes RogerEbert.com There's a lot to like in Ali's latest, "Highway," which is a gorgeously assembled, ambitious piece of work, although it doesn't coalesce into a holistically successful film. Rated: 2.5/4 Feb 21, 2014 Full Review Rachel Saltz New York Times The film can't sustain a tone, wavering between realism and Bollywood hokum. Feb 20, 2014 Full Review Kaleem Aftab The National (UAE) The action is held together by a star-making performance from Alia Bhatt. Rated: 4/5 May 14, 2018 Full Review Sapna Samant Flicks (AU, NZ, UK) The diverse beauty of rural India is a character in this story. There are long moments of silence, uncomfortable, beautiful and empty, even if filled with song. Rated: 4/5 Oct 31, 2017 Full Review Priya Joshi Digital Spy It's exemplary filmmaking, and the hope is that audiences will take a detour from the confines of commercial Bollywood and embrace this wholly edifying experience. Highway will move you in ways you would have never expected. Rated: 4/5 Oct 30, 2017 Full Review Manjusha Radhakrishnan Gulf News (UAE) Watch this one for Bhatt and Hooda. They are at their vulnerable, rugged best. Plus, if you are in the mood to see India in its raw, unpolished state, Highway can be an exhilarating ride. Aug 31, 2017 Full Review Read all reviews

Cuimhne M Highway “From the same old road, the same old way, I lost myself more every day Every breath I took, I felt dead. I saw the highway to a new place, I set foot on it, left that old road's space. Highway says to me, “If you are breathing, then keep on going You will breathe the air with ease You will break the chain and be free From chaos and find the peace within.” I am a huge fan of Imitaz ali and his movies as they hold very deep message and this movie beautifully portrait the freedom we all crave. I watched Highway a while back, and I might not remember every single detail, but what I do remember is how the movie felt. It wasn’t your typical Bollywood drama it more about what’s going on inside the characters than what’s happening outside. It had this raw, emotional vibe that just hits different. Especially watching someone go from being completely trapped in their life to slowly discovering freedom in the most unexpected way. If I talk about how the main character, Veera (Alia Bhatt) felt so trapped that she had to sneak out to breathe air and from getting kidnapped by strangers to finding out what the taste of freedom is, how her mother kept her quiet all of her life and how she roared later on. I sometimes relate to this movie, we all do infact, the feeling of being stuck in your house, not able to speak what we want to, and swallowing the thoughts thinking they might judge, this movie is a treasure for me. Whenever I feel like I am not able to be myself I play this very special song Patakha Guddi by Sultana and Jyoti Nooran, this song expresses it’s own story, from walking around, dancing every steps like Ganga river, that’s how Veera felt when she was free. From everyone deciding who I am, to finding out “I”. To every new highway Veera took, she got closer to herself. “No one can stop me as now I am free” Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/18/25 Full Review Audience Member Probably Imtiaz Ali's least Imtiaz Ali film, which is a good thing. Highway tells a story that hasn't been told before in Indian cinema, and tells it well. Randeep Hooda and Alia Bhatt are excellent. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member The best film I have seen in ages. Excellent acting and stunning cinematography. The freedom of self-expression that Veera experiences is believable, as is the tortured resignation of Mahabir, before he allows himself to be transformed. I found it very moving. I encourage Westerners to watch this. The dialogue is minimal so the subtitles are easy to follow. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review sandeep p A journey with a twist and more. From the deep and highly lands of beautiful india to exemplary character arcs, this movie delivers not only on criminal mastermind but on dreams of freedom. A must see Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A purposeful movie which looks into the pathos and ethos of living a human life. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Highway is a heartbreaking depiction of trauma and love: the most mature delving of Imtiaz Alj into the subject. And it has overarching subjects of a spectacular road movie: but had the treatment got in rhythm with the sync and the emotional coherence was lovelier than the warmth of romance: it could have been a better film. But it's still not worth giving a skip. Please watch it because there's a moody exploration of people and places. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
