Critics Consensus

Faster paced for today's audiences, this Hills remake ratchets up the gore for the hardcore horror fans, but will turn away casual audiences.

Brian Tallerico UGO Like Craven's original, Aja's version gets the job done - it makes your stomach turn, puts you on edge, and gives you a horror-movie ride. Mar 24, 2007 Full Review Richard Roeper Ebert & Roeper It's just nasty. Mar 20, 2006 Full Review Nick Schager Lessons of Darkness What's fundamentally missing is the anarchic, irrational unpredictability that made the original so terrifying. Audience M The Hills Have Eyes, directed by Alexandre Aja, is a brutal and unflinching horror film that mixes tension and shocking gore. A remake of Wes Craven's 1977 classic, even though it follows the same premise as the original, it adds some originality towards the finale. While it may not offer much in terms of subtlety or depth, it delivers an effective, raw horror experience. The characters, while not deeply developed, serve their purpose within the story, and the film's exploitation elements are certainly not for the faint of heart. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/09/24 Full Review Audience Member Absolutely terrified me as a kid. As an adult coming back, the build up was perfection through great camera work and annoyingly relatable characters (I felt bad for all of them). The remaining carnage of the final act is in the eye of the beholder. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/02/24 Full Review Blu B I can see if someone has never seen the 77' one why this would be higher. But this does nothing to fix any of the problems the original had, and pretty much every single thing that did right this does worse. It's still just as unfocused once they get stranded, none of the characters are that memorable or have much chemistry, and the villians aren't as good. They are now Fallout like deformed ghouls which is kind of cool I guess but I don't know the other normal hillbilly cannibals seems more real and grounded. This obvilously is gonig for more in the way of exploitation, shock value, and gore fest to cover up the lack of substance. This adds almost 30 minutes to the runtime and yes adds nothing in the way of plot ideas or more character or even bothering to fix anything. The ediitng and pacing are terrible here. It just goes long stretches with no dialouge and just gore/shock and gets hard to follow at certain points. Everything else isn't that good here. Again, I can see someone being a bit more kind fi they never seen the 77' one. I would say skip it and watch the 77' one if your really curious about it. This drags terribly throughout and the editing is just so poor. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/01/24 Full Review Audience Member Fun horror with all the classic sterotypes. Some good moments, found the ending a bit lacking. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/16/24 Full Review Brad M Not a bad horror movie. The inbreeds were pretty gross looking. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/09/24 Full Review jason f Perfection in my opinion..this movie is what a horror movie should be..scary,gory,and it will even offend you..it’s horrifying Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
