In March 1981, inspired by a dangerous obsession with the film Taxi Driver and actress Jodie Foster, a man named John Hinckley tried to assassinate President Ronald Reagan. The attack shocked the world and forever changed American history. Found not guilty by reason of insanity, Hinckley spent thirty-five years in a psychiatric hospital. Nearly 40 years later, a judge granted him his unconditional release. HINCKLEY presents an unsparing profile of a man whose shocking act of political violence forever changed a nation and still resonates today. It examines Hinckley's troubled early life, his obsessions and other attempts at assassination, the leadup and aftermath of his attack on Reagan, and whether or not redemption is possible for one of America's most infamous men, especially in a nation deeply divided by politics and gripped by gun violence.

Claudia Puig FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) I felt queasy at the end. Sep 16, 2024 Full Review Nick Schager The Daily Beast Omits as much as it reveals, fixating so doggedly on its subject that it fails to dig into the various pertinent questions and dilemmas raised by his tale. Aug 27, 2024 Full Review Wade Major FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) An important documentary that plugs a hole in our historical and cultural narrative. Sep 16, 2024 Full Review Peter Gray The AU Review It’s a film that’s at once informative and entertaining, and having an outsider’s view like that of an Australian only benefits the storytelling aspect. Rated: 4/5 Sep 7, 2024 Full Review David Griffiths Subculture Entertainment A brilliant film that does what so few true crime docos can do - hear from the perpetrator themselves. This amazing film takes the audience behind the scenes of one of crimes that truly changed the US justice system. Rated: 4.5/5 Sep 4, 2024 Full Review Stephen Silver Splice Today Hinckley’s a monotone interview subject, but the documentary is valuable because he hasn’t talked at this length before.
