Confusion reigns when reclusive British painter Priam Farrel (Roland Young) is mistaken for his valet, Henry Leek (Philip Tonge), who has died of pneumonia. Leek's body is interred at Westminster Abbey as the art world mourns Farrel. When young widow Alice (Lillian Gish), who has been corresponding with the valet, also confuses Farrel with Leek, the artist decides to simply accept his new identity. Farrel marries Alice but continues painting, which eventually leads to a startling discovery.
