Critics Consensus

Though Hit & Run has some surprisingly oft-kilter filmmaking, the action doesn't add to much and the writing's a bit smug.

Serena Donadoni indieWire Shepard wrote the script and co-directed with David Palmer (Brother's Justice), constructing an ideal vehicle for the real-life couple's spirited banter. Rated: B+ Oct 26, 2012 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times There is a lot of boring Clarksonian chatter about motorcars, but, inhibited by a modest budget, the stunts prove to be depressingly unspectacular. Rated: 2/5 Oct 13, 2012 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian It's amiable, but the more miles it clocks up, the more this film looks like a vanity vehicle for its co-director, writer and star, Dax Shepard. Rated: 2/5 Oct 11, 2012 Full Review Jason Best Movie Talk Hit & Run is very much hit and miss. The plot careers all over the place and a lot of the jokes definitely sputter, but with the laidback, goofy Shepard at the wheel, the film somehow keeps on the road. Dec 16, 2020 Full Review Allen Almachar The MacGuffin I went into Hit & Run with the lowest possible expectations, and even then I'm not so sure it met them. Rated: C+ Jul 30, 2020 Full Review Jim Ross TAKE ONE Magazine HIT AND RUN is a film that turns out to be more than the sum of its parts, even if it ends up feeling a bit generic and stupid. Kaitlyn K Knowing everything I know about Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell's relationship, and the inspiration for Dax writing this script, makes me love this movie so much! I'm in appreciative awe every time I watch this, purely grateful for Dax touching on this subject matter - how a couple navigates the past, and what it means for their present relationship (and, ultimately, their future). Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Written, co-directed, co-edited, staring, and stunt driving by Dax Shepard, Dax plays an ex-con getaway driver named Charles Bronson who's now in the witness protection program, but when his girlfriend (played by real-life girlfriend Kirsten Bell) has to get to LA in time for an interview, he risks exposing himself to the criminals he's hiding from. Add into the mix a deranged ex-boyfriend (Michael Rosenbaum), an incompetent parole officer (Tom Arnold), and two federal marshals (Jason Bateman being one of them), you have a reasonable set-up for a "Smokey and the Bandit" style of car chase comedy. "Hit and Run" is not as great as Smokey, but it has a likable cast, which also includes Bradley Cooper, Kristin Chenoweth, Tom Arnold, Beau Bridges, Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, David Koechner, and features some terrific stunt driving, all of which Shepard did himself using mostly cars he personally owned. During one sketchy stunt at the end of the film, Bell tells a story of how she decided to ride in the car with Shepard instead of using a stunt double, figuring it would be great for the film or they would simply die together. She the qualified that decision by saying, this was before they'd gotten married and had kids and that she'd never do something like that now. "Hit and Run" isn't a classic, but if you enjoy muscle car flicks like "Smokey and the Bandit" and "Gone in 60 Seconds" you'd probably dig this film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review gustavo t Entertaining, funny, cool jokes, and some really nice actors! It's definitely worth watching and it deserves a much higher score than it has. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member it could of been better if they played out his past relationships more. The ending doesn't seem final so the movie feels like it falls short. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Decent watch, would watch again, and can recommend, but probably better for first time watchers. So cute to see Kristen Bell and Dax Shepherd (married) start the movie in bed doing gross relationship stuff. The action is done decent enough in this as it's mostly driving, but dressed up as it is, it's a rom-com and I think it's hurt some by trying to cross genres. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review yash b "Hit and Run" has a couple funny moments and some stylish scenes, but as a whole is still a bad movie. The actors do an okay job in the movie and I thought comedically, Bradley Cooper was the standout, despite not being in the movie much. However, the movie suffers from having an uninteresting story and lots of unfunny moments. I can think of many action comedies that are so much better than this one. Fans of this genre deserve better and can definitely make better use of their time. In the end, I found myself waiting for the story to go somewhere interesting while watching this movie and wasn't laughing much along the way.
