Critics Consensus

Finding treasure in others' trash, Hoard is a beautifully acted and sweetly humanist debut for writer-director Luna Carmoon.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk Spit-soaked and admirably weird though it is, Hoard just doesn’t quite build to saying anything about its own grossness. Rated: 3/5 Sep 17, 2024 Full Review Amy Nicholson FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) Stylish, unusual, and challenging. Sep 17, 2024 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times “Hoard” is never a drag. The insolence of the filmmaking and the artlessness of the leads energize a plot of stunning recklessness and unexpected humor. Sep 5, 2024 Full Review Daniela Urzola Caimán Cuadernos de Cine Although there are script decisions that aren't fully understood, Hoard is at least an original film, which explores recurring themes in cinema from a different point of view, with truly exceptional performances.[Full review in Spanish] Oct 23, 2024 Full Review Sebastian Zavala Kahn Ventana Indiscreta The film presents an unusual and emotionally powerful narrative about toxic relationships. It is an original proposal that offers a profound reflection on the impact of memories and maternal love in extreme conditions. Full review in Spanish. Rated: 4/5 Sep 20, 2024 Full Review Marya E. Gates Cool People Have Feelings, Too. (Substack) This is fearless, personal filmmaking and absolutely worth seeking out. Sep 20, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Vicki G This film is a thoughtful examination of the impact of parental mental illness. It has a real vintage feel to it, reminiscent of 1960's b/w kitchen sink dramas such as Poor Cow. I was really surprised it was a recent production. The acting is 100%, and I felt it was a welcome reminder that although we don't all dance to the same beat, there is beauty and love in lives that can be incomprehensible and chaotic to the mainstream eye. Having worked in social services this film would make good required viewing for trainee social workers. It has the feel of future curriculum viewing. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Lucie J Absolutely amazing, best film I've seen in a long time. Acting was 10 out of 10, such a unique and weird film, I just loved it .... it's definitely a must see. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/10/25 Full Review Angus H A horrible film with (apart from Samantha Spiro’s performance) no redeeming qualities whatsoever, and a borderline trite and offensive depiction of the nature causes and treatment of mental disorder. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Joseph G entire movie made no sense Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/30/24 Full Review Wave R I walked out … absolutely obnoxious. The repulsive scene with the mother’s ashes was the final straw. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/25 Full Review Neil J After 45 minutes, I thought "so, everybody involved is badly damaged and their actions make no sense. Where is this going?" At the end I concluded everybody involved is badly damaged, their actions make no sense, and it didn't go anywhere. Two stars for the lead actress, who inhabits her character to the extent that she seems possessed. The rest of the film gets a zero. Extremely poor character and plot development. To cite just one example - we're supposed to believe Michael's girlfriend seems to calm down and forgive him just that easily in the end?! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/16/25 Full Review Read all reviews
