Gary L This isn't the '54 David Lean version which is the classic. But it has its own chars and worth watching. Lean's was as sharp as a blade. There wasn't a wasted move, gesture or facial expression. And no one will ever match the mixture or comedy and brutality that Laughton brought to the part of Hobson. But there is a sentimentality in this version. Warden is certainly serviceable as Hobson, and there is little colour and empathy in this version that the original would never had wanted. This version is not the perfect classic, but it is a pleasant sweetness which is worth seeing. I guess the difference is encapsulated in the final shot, which is a smiling Sharon Gless -- miles from the intent and discipline of the Lean version, but pleasant in its own way.
