Critics Consensus

Hocus Pocus 2 is basically a boiling cauldron of nostalgia, but that's just enough for this belated sequel to cast a reasonably effective spell.

Gregory Wakeman Chicago Reader As soon as the trio turn up, Hocus Pocus 2 immediately becomes compelling and enjoyable. Oct 7, 2022 Full Review Carmen Phillips Autostraddle Hocus Pocus 2 really is cute (enough). If you’re in the right mood, it’s maybe even good. Oct 4, 2022 Full Review Shirley Li The Atlantic The film wears its ridiculousness so proudly, it’s impossible to disdain. It is both a diverting watch and a sly commentary on its predecessor’s strengths. Oct 3, 2022 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net Hocus Pocus 2 made me laugh, often uncontrollably, and it made me misty-eyed by the end. That’s all I ask from films like it, and I can’t wait to see it again with my friends. Preferably in costume, with candy, and then again every year afterward. Rated: 4/5 Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed There is a lot to enjoy about the sequel, even for stubborn fanatics of the Kenny Ortega feature film. Oct 2, 2023 Full Review Kevin Slane Boston.com While there are plenty of fan service nods to its 1993 predecessor, “Hocus Pocus 2” stands capably on its own, offering a spooky diversion for a whole new generation of viewers. Tilly B I loved this movie a lot, you could tell the love and enjoyment poured into this, these movies are my comfort films! Thanks to the cast and creative team for creating something so special! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Jay W First one of course solid movie! This one without getting too critical, just had bad writing plain and simple the Sandersons were great, I’m only writing review in hopes that it makes a difference in the 3rd movie in production, (though not likely) the biggest thing that stood out to me was the original had a more organic story line; character interactions were so good, this second one honestly felt like an attempt to make every scene a meme; a gif; something to keep the audience from pulling up there phone and doom scroll. You had our attention with the 1st, we can handle slightly longer attention spanned story, this is the divide,.. kids like this movie it keeps sprinkling things that draws your attention. Here’s to hoping the 3rd will be fun and little more natural feeling! Will update if I ever watch this again…. Review is based off a watch from last year. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Matteo M This soulless sequel has nothing going for it. The parts that are intended to be humorous just feel stale and unoriginal, unaided by tired and bad acting. The biggest spell that this mediocre flick successfully produced is removing all the magic of the original. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/04/24 Full Review Niklas F Having never seen the original Hocus Pocus, I watched both movies for the first time this Halloween with no nostalgic ties and to my surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed them! They’re funny, entertaining, and filled with a unique charm that truly makes them memorable. The Sanderson Sisters are absolutely iconic. Their distinct appearances, quirky personalities, and undeniable charisma make them the heart of the series. Without them, these movies simply wouldn’t be the same, and the sequel does an excellent job of showcasing just how essential they are to the story. [POSSIBLE SPOILER] The ending felt a bit abrupt, especially with the sudden shift in Winifred’s personality. She seemed completely different, her whole appearance suddenly changed. I fought this was very weird. [SPOILER END] Overall, Hocus Pocus 2 didn’t disappoint. It strikes a perfect balance between nostalgia and fresh, enjoyable content. One particular highlight for me was the song “One Way or Another,” which is actually how I first discovered the series. It brings back the charm and fun that fans of the original will appreciate, while adding a modern twist for new viewers like myself. It’s a fantastic Halloween watch that lives up to the legacy of the Sanderson Sisters, delivering plenty of laughs, magic, and memorable moments. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/02/24 Full Review Leanne B Absolutely awful. There are no other words. It just seemed they got all the actors/actresses together and said just do and say what you want. It was all over the place. The acting was awkward, it was so cringe. The only bit I enjoyed was the start when the sisters were little girls. The girl who played Winnie was great. Other than that I’ve never watched a film I wanted to turn off half hour in. Never again will I watch this. No where near the first which is a classic! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/01/24 Full Review Erin H Awful. I am pretending it doesn’t exist. Stop ruining the best movies with these terrible remakes and sequels!
