Critics Consensus

Hocus Pocus 2 is basically a boiling cauldron of nostalgia, but that's just enough for this belated sequel to cast a reasonably effective spell.

Gregory Wakeman Chicago Reader As soon as the trio turn up, Hocus Pocus 2 immediately becomes compelling and enjoyable. Oct 7, 2022 Full Review Carmen Phillips Autostraddle Hocus Pocus 2 really is cute (enough). If you’re in the right mood, it’s maybe even good. Oct 4, 2022 Full Review Shirley Li The Atlantic The film wears its ridiculousness so proudly, it’s impossible to disdain. It is both a diverting watch and a sly commentary on its predecessor’s strengths. Oct 3, 2022 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net Hocus Pocus 2 made me laugh, often uncontrollably, and it made me misty-eyed by the end. That’s all I ask from films like it, and I can’t wait to see it again with my friends. Preferably in costume, with candy, and then again every year afterward. Rated: 4/5 Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed There is a lot to enjoy about the sequel, even for stubborn fanatics of the Kenny Ortega feature film. Oct 2, 2023 Full Review Kevin Slane Boston.com While there are plenty of fan service nods to its 1993 predecessor, “Hocus Pocus 2” stands capably on its own, offering a spooky diversion for a whole new generation of viewers. Sophia S Absolutely love this movies, me and my 5yo daughter have watched it many times throughout the years its been out (no matter the time of year). There's something incredibly nostalgic about it, I grew up watching the 1st Hocus Pocus and I love that my daughter is just as inlove with both movies as me. The 2nd movie has beautifully captured the very same essence of the 1st. I just wish there was a 3rd and 4th!! These types of movies can never be over done, anyone saying so is a rotten tomato😂 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/18/25 Full Review Triston S I have to say that I think I thought that this was the actual sequel to the original but it turned entirely I was wrong I read the Hocus pocus & the all new sequel was the original sequel and the original book sequel better than the movie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/04/25 Full Review Cheyenne G The absolute worst. If you liked this movie, I genuinely think nostalgia blinded you—or you’re a kid who just doesn’t know any better. Hocus Pocus 2 tries to ride the coattails of the original by recycling iconic lines, but instead of feeling nostalgic, it comes off as forced, cringey, and repetitive. What made the original special was its perfect blend of spooky charm, cheeky humor, and unapologetically evil witches. The Sanderson sisters were villains—and we loved them for it. So the attempt to give them a tragic backstory and turn them into sympathetic, almost heroic figures? A complete betrayal of what made them iconic in the first place. It felt like the movie was trying to rewrite their entire legacy—and for what? A soft, sanitized ending that pleased no one. They tried to appeal to both 90s kids and modern kids, but the end result was a confused mess that didn’t satisfy either. The town didn’t even feel Halloween-y, It lacked the spooky mood, the magic, and the mischief. I didn’t just dislike this movie—I genuinely hated it. A soulless sequel that missed the entire point of the original. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/03/25 Full Review Stephen C LOL, 1 hour and 43 minutes of holiday comedy. Rated PG for Action, Some Language, and Macabre/Suggestive Humor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/13/25 Full Review Victoria G It’s not of the same caliber as the original but a must see for any Hocus Pocus fan. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review Cristian F I think the movies does give a certain nod to its predecesor but still remaining an enjoyable film for these present generations. It really felt amazing to watch. It may not please everyone but what does? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Read all reviews
