      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Hocus Pocus 2 is basically a boiling cauldron of nostalgia, but that's just enough for this belated sequel to cast a reasonably effective spell.

      Audience Consensus

Hocus Pocus 2 has its moments, but for fans who've waited years for a sequel to the original, this is mostly a disappointment.

Tharja P Nothing compared to the original. Waste of time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/04/24 Full Review Max S It was fine, stupid and not that great of a sequel. But mostly fine Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/23/24 Full Review The M Bad and boring.,........ Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/24 Full Review Jeff M It's rather pointless reviewing this movie, so I'll keep it brief. If you loved the first HOCUS POCUS, odds are you'll find a lot here to enjoy. I was not a fan of the first movie - in fact, I thought it was pretty dreadful. And like ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, I just don't understand the cult status it has achieved over the years. I had very low expectations for part two considering my disdain for part one, and those expectations were met. I'm all for good campy fun, but these movies for me emphasize too much camp and not enough fun. The actresses obviously enjoy chewing up the scenery, but the performances themselves are borderline cringe-worthy. And the young actresses who play their rivals are pretty much the same. I think of a movie like this compared to something like Nicholas Roeg's masterful THE WITCHES (1990) and there's no contest. But as I stated upfront, a movie like this is critic proof. If you enjoy it, more power to you. As for me, neither HOCUS POCUS movie is able to cast even the faintest of spells over this cranky old man. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/24 Full Review Anna Loved it such a good movie my favorite one to watch every Halloween with my family. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/24 Full Review Alexander A An enjoyable watch that leans into the fun and camp of Hallowe'en, without ever tipping over into a fully farcical comedy. Hocus Pocus 2 revives the Sanderson sisters for a second Hallowe'en of wreaking havoc in Salem, without falling into the trap of being a sequel that undoes all of the character and plot development from the first movie, nor being a sequel that requires watching the first movie to understand crucial plot details. The various plot threads are woven excellently throughout the film, with all relevant plot threads and character motivations being established throughout the first few scenes and wrapped up satisfactorily in the third act. Additionally, Hocus Pocus 2 does a far better job grounding the plot of the film in a believable suspension of disbelief than the original film: the protagonists' motivations are clear and in-character; the methods of fighting the Sanderson sisters are properly established throughout the plot; and the Sanderson sisters' reactions to the modern age are funny, but not absurdly overdone. Refreshingly, the movie avoids the over-dramatized depictions of teenage life that tend to dominate films about high school. The teenage characters have conflicts that are realistic for modern teenagers, without being depicted as overly mature, wise, and sexualized, nor overly childish, whiny, and foolish. Importantly, the discussions of teenage virginity are handled far more appropriately in this film than in the original. Overall, Hocus Pocus 2 is a funny, well-made film that makes for an enjoyable watch for children and adults alike. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/07/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Gregory Wakeman Chicago Reader As soon as the trio turn up, Hocus Pocus 2 immediately becomes compelling and enjoyable. Oct 7, 2022 Full Review Carmen Phillips Autostraddle Hocus Pocus 2 really is cute (enough). If you’re in the right mood, it’s maybe even good. Oct 4, 2022 Full Review Shirley Li The Atlantic The film wears its ridiculousness so proudly, it’s impossible to disdain. It is both a diverting watch and a sly commentary on its predecessor’s strengths. Oct 3, 2022 Full Review Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed There is a lot to enjoy about the sequel, even for stubborn fanatics of the Kenny Ortega feature film. Oct 2, 2023 Full Review Kevin Slane Boston.com While there are plenty of fan service nods to its 1993 predecessor, “Hocus Pocus 2” stands capably on its own, offering a spooky diversion for a whole new generation of viewers.
