What to Know

Critics Consensus

Holidate's self-aware approach to rom-com formula is refreshing, but it's offset by a questionable premise and unnecessarily vulgar jokes.

Elamin Abdelmahmoud BuzzFeed News Every scene is drudgery, every joke is homework, and every plot point is hell. Apr 5, 2022 Full Review Rachel Charlene Lewis Bitch Media I wish the film had the guts to sit here longer, but, instead, it continues with the unnecessary chaos... Nov 10, 2020 Full Review Karen Han Polygon Holidate falls in the bland no-man's land between being sharp enough to appeal to adults (à la Bridesmaids) and tame enough to watch with the whole family. Oct 30, 2020 Full Review Fletcher Peters The Daily Beast Sloane and Jackson have wonderful chemistry... Dec 5, 2022 Full Review Zoë Rose Bryant Loud and Clear Reviews Holidate is a hilarious and heartfelt addition to the “holiday romcom” canon, carried commendably by Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey. Rated: 4/5 Sep 1, 2022 Full Review Audrey Fox We Live Entertainment The biggest issue with Holidate is that none of the characters are likable, least of all our two would-be lovers. Mia S I know this movie got a lot of hate, but personally I loved it! It was basically like a hallmark movie but better. The acting was pretty good and the plot pretty original not just like any other holiday romance movie you see. Definitely recommend it! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Matty D Holidate is one of those movies that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and you shouldn’t either, but leaves you feeling cheerful and in good spirits. It’s the perfect holiday date flick, as it covers all of the major holidays and feelings of loneliness that come with it. I feel as if it could have snuck in a joke or two about lesser-celebrated holidays (arbor day anyone?) But that’s not the kind of comedy it goes for, which is also the weakest element of the whole film. As a believable romantic endeavor, Holidate succeeds just fine. For that, I recommend it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/16/24 Full Review Madison U A wonderful film that expresses every holiday and the stresses of each and every one! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/04/24 Full Review Rebecca R This film met my low expectations and it’s bad even by Hallmark Christmas movie standards. The jokes are consistently unfunny, ranging from immature ones like poop jokes apparently aimed at children to childish, awkward jokes about bedroom behavior and a clothes-ripping-revealing-boobs-in-public-joke. Then, they’ll throw in moments where a character uses inappropriate language in front of a child, followed by “oops, sorry kids” reactions, which seem misplaced for any audience. To make up for the lack of actual adult humor, the movie uses “f***” about thirty times, even dedicating a whole joke to it, which feels forced and excessive by the end. The one slight positive is the variety of settings, which adds some unpredictability, but it doesn't do much to improve the story. The leads' plan to avoid being pitied by their families makes little sense—they admit right away they’re not romantically interested in each other, even though fake dating would have solved their problems. Plus, their first holiday together is spent at a club, with none of the family they’re trying to avoid/impress? present, except one basically irrelevant character. In the end, the film feels like a weak attempt at adult humor and offers little to enjoy. Whether it’s better or worse for failing at its own genre is debatable, but watching it was no fun. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/20/24 Full Review angela g this is a great underrated rom com Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey did a great job at being a couple love this movie watch it Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/31/24 Full Review Jade O I think it’s hilarious, with Emma Roberts being her usually wonderful and charismatic self, while Luke Bracey is able to give us a caring, yet at some times prudish love interest with blends perfectly with Emma Roberts’s Sloane. It’s goofy, and wonderfully campy, and is criminally underrated. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/06/24 Full Review Read all reviews
